REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Pick-Up and 4Runner
1989-95 MODELS
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers.
  6.  
  7. Remove the hood release lever from the panel. Its held by two screws.
  8.  
  9. Separate the cowl side trim on each side. You might refer to it as the kick panel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lower center instrument panel cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the ignition key cylinder cover.
  14.  
  15. Detach the No. 1 lower finish panel; this is the panel holding the left speaker and running under the steering column.
  16.  
  17. Remove the heater duct to No. 2 outlet.
  18.  
  19. Pull off the heater control knobs, remove the A/C switch if equipped and gently pry up on the heater control unit to remove it. The prying tool should have a taped or protected edge.
  20.  
  21. For all models except Pick-Ups with 4 speed manual transmissions, remove the 3 screws holding the meter trim. Pull the trim or surround panel outward and disconnect the connectors. On 4Runner, remove the two screws and the cup holder from the panel.
  22.  
  23. For Pick-Ups with 4 speed manual transmissions, the trim is held only by two screws. Disconnect the connectors and remove the trim panel.
  24.  
  25. Remove the No.1 air outlet. Its held by 2 screws.
  26.  
  27. Remove the four screws holding the combination meter. Work it out of the panel until access is gained to the rear. Disconnect the speedometer cable and remove the electrical connectors. Remove the meter assembly, placing it in a safe location out of the work area.
  28.  

To install:
  1. Install the lower center instrument panel cover.
  2.  
  3. Install the cowl side trim (kick panels).
  4.  
  5. Attach the hood release and bracket.
  6.  
  7. Install the steering column covers.
  8.  
  9. Install the steering wheel.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine, allowing it to idle. Check the function of each dash component including all switches, heater and A/C output, speaker operation and dashboard warning lamps and instruments.
  14.  

1996 MODELS

CAUTION
Your vehicle may contain an air bag system. Read the procedure in this section of how to disarm the system before proceeding.

  1. Disable the SRS system.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cowl side trim and the front door scuff plate.
  8.  
  9. Remove the retainers securing the lower finish panel, then remove the hood and fuel tank release lever screws.
  10.  
  11. Remove the ignition switch bezel.
  12.  
  13. Detach the No. 2 and No. 1 heater-to-register duct.
  14.  
  15. Remove the cluster finish panel, then remove.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the harness for the combination meter. Remove the screws securing the meter, then remove it from the vehicle.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Attach the harness to the combination meter, then attach to the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the cluster finish panel.
  4.  
  5. Attach the No. 2 and No. 1 heater-to-register duct.
  6.  
  7. Install the ignition switch bezel.
  8.  
  9. Install the lower finish panel, then attach the hood and fuel tank release lever.
  10.  
  11. Install the cowl side trim and the front door scuff plate.
  12.  
  13. Install the steering wheel.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  

Tacoma

CAUTION
Your vehicle may contain an air bag system. Read the procedure in this section of how to disarm the system before proceeding.

  1. Disable the SRS system.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the following:
    1. Steering column cover
    2.  
    3. Hood lock release lever
    4.  
    5. Combination switch
    6.  
    7. Fuse box cover
    8.  

  8.  
  9. Remove the lower left hand finish panel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the following parts:
    1. Ignition switch bezel
    2.  
    3. No. 2 heater-to-register
    4.  
    5. Steering column
    6.  

  12.  
  13. Remove the cup holder and the heater control knobs.
  14.  
  15. With the aid of a flat-bladded tool, remove the heater control panel.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the hazard harness.
  18.  
  19. Remove the mounting screws for the center cluster finish panel.
  20.  
  21. Detach the heater control assembly.
  22.  
  23. Remove the radio.
  24.  
  25. Remove the screws mounting the cluster finish panel, then lower the panel.
  26.  
  27. Remove the combination meter screws and the speedometer cable.
  28.  
  29. Disconnect the harness.
  30.  

To install:
  1. Attach the harness to the combination meter.
  2.  
  3. Install the speedometer cable, then the combination meter.
  4.  
  5. Install the cluster finish panel.
  6.  
  7. Install the radio.
  8.  
  9. Place the heater control assembly in the dash.
  10.  
  11. Reinstall the mounting screws for the center cluster finish panel and tighten.
  12.  
  13. Install the harness for the hazard switch.
  14.  
  15. Place the heater control panel in the dash.
  16.  
  17. Install the cup holder and the heater control knobs.
  18.  
  19. Reattach the following parts:
    1. Ignition switch bezel
    2.  
    3. No. 2 heater-to-register
    4.  
    5. Steering column
    6.  

  20.  
  21. Tighten the lower left hand finish panel.
  22.  
  23. Install the following:
    1. Steering column cover
    2.  
    3. Hood lock release lever
    4.  
    5. Combination switch
    6.  
    7. Fuse box cover
    8.  

  24.  
  25. Install the steering wheel, then connect the negative battery cable.
  26.  

T100

CAUTION
Your vehicle may contain an air bag system. Read the procedure in this section of how to disarm the system before proceeding.

  1. Disable the SRS system.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front pillar garnish.
  6.  
  7. Unscrew the front door scuff plate and the cowl side trims.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering wheel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the following:
    1. Steering column cover
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the hood lock release lever
    4.  
    5. Detach the No. 1 lower finish panel
    6.  
    7. Remove the combination switch
    8.  
    9. Remove the glove box door
    10.  
    11. Detach the No. 2 lower finish panel
    12.  
    13. Remove the lower center panel
    14.  

  12.  
  13. Remove the screws retaining the center cluster finish panel, then detach the harness from the unit.
  14.  
  15. Remove the stereo opening cover.
  16.  
  17. Remove the screws securing the meter, then remove the combination meter from the dash.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Tighten the combination meter into place.
  2.  
  3. Attach the stereo opening cover.
  4.  
  5. Attach the cluster harness, then install and tighten the screws that retain the center cluster finish panel.
  6.  
  7. Install the following:
    1. Steering column cover
    2.  
    3. Install the hood lock release lever
    4.  
    5. Attach the No. 1 lower finish panel
    6.  
    7. Install the combination switch
    8.  
    9. Install the glove box door
    10.  
    11. Install the No. 2 lower finish panel
    12.  
    13. Install the lower center panel
    14.  

  8.  
  9. Install the steering wheel.
  10.  
  11. Attach, then tighten the front door scuff plate and the cowl side trims.
  12.  
  13. Place the front pillar garnish into position and tighten the screws.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  

Land Cruiser
1989-90 MODELS
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the Nos. 2 and 3 air ducts. These are above the drivers knees under the dash.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the throttle cable from the accelerator pedal and retainer. Remove the cable set nut and remove the cable.
  8.  
  9. Remove the hood release lever and the fuel lid opener lever.
  10.  
  11. Remove the heater control lever knobs. Remove the ash tray.
  12.  
  13. Remove the five screws and two clips holding the center instrument finish panel. Remove the panel and disconnect the wiring harnesses.
  14.  
  15. Remove the seven screws holding the instrument cluster trim panel. Loosen the panel, disconnect the wiring and unhook the speedometer cable.
  16.  
  17. Remove the radio.
  18.  
  19. Remove the glove box door. Remove the courtesy switch and light.
  20.  
  21. Remove the four screws holding the glove box; remove the latch striker and remove the glove box.
  22.  
  23. Remove the mounting bolt holding the EFI computer; pull it out gently and disconnect the wire harness. Place the computer in a very safe location out of the work area.
  24.  
  25. Remove air ducts Nos. 1, 3 and 4; each is held by a single screw.
  26.  
  27. At the side defrosters, remove only the lower screw and disconnect the defroster hose.
  28.  
  29. Remove the four screws and four nuts holding the safety pad. Loosen two clips and remove the pad.
  30.  
  31. Remove the heater control panel.
  32.  
  33. Disconnect the electrical connectors at the mirror control switch, the dimmer and 4WD control.
  34.  
  35. Remove the fuse box; its held by two screws.
  36.  
  37. Remove the two upper side mounting bolts holding the steering column.
  38.  
  39. The instrument panel is held by 15 bolts. Once the bolts are removed, move the panel towards the rear of the vehicle to remove it. Once removed, the various components still on the panel may be removed if desired.
  40.  

To install:
  1. Assemble the instrument panel with any items removed. Fit the panel into place, connect the wiring and secure the retaining bolts. Make certain the panel is flush and level. The heater vent ducts must match up exactly with no leaks. Make any needed adjustments now.
  2.  
  3. Install the upper side mounting bolts holding the steering column.
  4.  
  5. Install the fuse box and cover.
  6.  
  7. Connect the mirror control switch, the dimmer and the 4WD switch connectors.
  8.  
  9. Connect the cables and install the heater controls.
  10.  
  11. Install the safety pad, making sure the clips are properly seated and that the piece is aligns perfectly.
  12.  
  13. Connect the side defroster hoses to the grilles and install the lower screws.
  14.  
  15. Attach the Nos. 1, 3, and 4 air ducts.
  16.  
  17. Connect the harness to the EFI computer and install the unit. Make sure the harness is connected squarely and firmly.
  18.  
  19. Install the glove box and striker. Connect the switch and light and install the glove box door.
  20.  
  21. Install the radio.
  22.  
  23. Place the instrument finish panel in place. Connect the speedometer cable and the electrical harnesses. Install the panel and the retaining screws.
  24.  
  25. Install the center lower trim panel, connecting the wiring as needed. Install the ash tray and install the heater control knobs.
  26.  
  27. Install the hood release and fuel door levers.
  28.  
  29. Connect the throttle cable to the accelerator pedal.
  30.  
  31. Attach the Nos. 2 and 3 air ducts.
  32.  
  33. Install the steering column covers.
  34.  
  35. Install the steering wheel.
  36.  
  37. Connect the negative battery cable.
  38.  
  39. Start the engine, allowing it to idle. Check the function of each dash component including all switches, heater and A/C output, speaker operation and dashboard warning lamps and instruments.
  40.  

1991-95 MODELS

CAUTION
Your vehicle may contain an air bag system. Read the procedure in this section of how to disarm the system before proceeding.

  1. Disable the SRS system.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Apply strips of protective tape on the inside of each windshield pillar. This will protect the trim during removal.
  8.  
  9. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers.
  10.  
  11. Remove the hood release and fuel door release levers.
  12.  
  13. Unscrew the lower trim panel below the steering column.
  14.  
  15. Remove the heater duct running to the left dash outlet (No. 2). The duct is the one under the dash, above the drivers knees.
  16.  
  17. Remove the combination switch from the steering column. The combination switch is the lighting control/turn signal/wiper control assembly.
  18.  
  19. Remove the turn signal bracket from the steering column; its the piece just below the combination switch.
  20.  
  21. Remove the ashtray and remove the ashtray holder.
  22.  
  23. Remove the three screws holding the lower instrument panel trim. The trim panel is held by six clips which must be released to remove the panel.
  24.  
  25. Remove the instrument cluster trim; it is held by six screws and two clips.
  26.  
  27. Remove the four screws holding the combination meter and gently loosen it; disconnect the electrical harnesses and unhook the speedometer cable. Place the instrument cluster in a safe location out of the work area.
  28.  

To install:
  1. Place the combination meter in position. Connect the speedometer cable and attach the wiring connectors. Make sure the electrical connectors are squarely and firmly seated. Install the meter unit.
  2.  
  3. Install the cluster trim panel. Make sure the clips are in place.
  4.  
  5. Install the lower center trim panel. All six clips must be correctly seated. Install the retaining screws.
  6.  
  7. Install the ashtray holder and the ashtray.
  8.  
  9. Install the turn signal bracket and the combination switch.
  10.  
  11. Connect the heater duct to air outlet No. 2.
  12.  
  13. Install the lower trim panel and the 4 screws.
  14.  
  15. Attach the hood and fuel door levers.
  16.  
  17. Install the steering column covers. Install the steering wheel.
  18.  
  19. Remove the protective tape from the windshield pillars.
  20.  
  21. Connect the negative battery cable.
  22.  
  23. Start the engine, allowing it to idle. Check the function of each dash component including all switches, heater and A/C output, speaker operation and dashboard warning lamps and instruments.
  24.  

1996 MODELS

CAUTION
Your vehicle may contain an air bag system. Read the procedure in this section of how to disarm the system before proceeding.

  1. Disable the SRS system.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Apply strips of protective tape on the inside of each windshield pillar. This will protect the trim during removal.
  8.  
  9. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers.
  10.  
  11. Remove the hood release and fuel door release levers.
  12.  
  13. Remove the fuse box opening cover.
  14.  
  15. Remove the retaining screws for the lower trim panel below the steering column.
  16.  
  17. Remove the lower instrument panel.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the No. 2 heater-to-register duct.
  20.  
  21. Loosen the screws and remove the fuse block.
  22.  
  23. Detach the No. 2 center cluster finish panel.
  24.  
  25. Remove the steering column.
  26.  
  27. Detach the cluster finish panel, then the combination meter.
  28.  
  29. Remove the center cluster finish panel assembly with the clock attached.
  30.  
  31. With the aid of a taped prytool, take off the 2 claws, then remove the cup holder hole cover.
  32.  
  33. Remove the ashtray.
  34.  
  35. Remove the center cluster finish panel with the heater control assembly, then disconnect the harness.
  36.  
  37. Remove the screws retaining the heater control assembly from the center cluster finish panel.
  38.  
  39. Remove the following:
    1. Radio
    2.  
    3. Glove compartment door
    4.  
    5. Speaker panel
    6.  
    7. Speaker
    8.  
    9. Front console box
    10.  
    11. Rear console box
    12.  

  40.  
  41. Loosen and remove the 5 screws and 9 bolts holding the instrument panel.
  42.  
  43. Remove the lower instrument panel reinforcement, then the No. 1 brace and the instrument panel.
  44.  

To install:
  1. Attach the No. 1 brace and lower instrument panel, then the instrument panel reinforcement.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the 5 screws and 9 bolts holding the instrument panel.
  4.  
  5. Install the following:
    1. Radio
    2.  
    3. Glove compartment door
    4.  
    5. Speaker panel
    6.  
    7. Speaker
    8.  
    9. Front console box
    10.  
    11. Rear console box
    12.  

  6.  
  7. Tighten the screws retaining the heater control assembly to the center cluster finish panel.
  8.  
  9. Connect the harness to the heater control, then attach the center cluster finish panel with the heater control assembly.
  10.  
  11. Reinstall the ashtray.
  12.  
  13. Place the cup holder hole cover into position.
  14.  
  15. Install the center cluster finish panel assembly with the clock attached.
  16.  
  17. Install the combination meter.
  18.  
  19. Attach the cluster finish panel.
  20.  
  21. Install the steering column.
  22.  
  23. Attach the No. 2 center cluster finish panel.
  24.  
  25. Install the fuse block.
  26.  
  27. Insert and attach the No. 2 heater-to-register duct.
  28.  
  29. Install and tighten down the lower instrument panel.
  30.  
  31. Place the lower trim panel below the steering column, then tighten.
  32.  
  33. Attach the fuse box opening cover.
  34.  
  35. Place into position, then tighten down the hood release and fuel door release levers.
  36.  
  37. Attach the upper and lower steering column covers.
  38.  
  39. Install the steering wheel.
  40.  
  41. Connect the negative battery cable.
  42.
