Pick-Up and 4Runner
1989-95 MODELS

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  


CAUTION
The air bag system (SRS) must be disarmed before removing the steering wheel. Failure to do so may cause accidental deployment, property damage or personal injury. Always store the air bag with the pad facing upward.

  1. Remove the steering wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers.
  4.  
  5. Remove the hood release lever from the panel. It's held by two screws.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cowl side trim on each side. You might refer to it as the kick panel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower center instrument panel cover.

  1. Remove the ignition key cylinder cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the No. 1 lower finish panel; this is the panel holding the left speaker and running under the steering column.

  1. Remove the heater duct to No. 2 outlet.
  2.  
  3. Pull off the heater control knobs, remove the A/C switch if equipped and gently pry up on the heater control unit to remove it. The prying tool should have a taped or protected edge.
  4.  
  5. For all models except Pick-Ups with 4 speed manual transmissions, remove the 3 screws holding the meter trim. Pull the trim or surround panel outward and unplug the connectors. On 4Runner, remove the two screws and the cup holder from the panel.
  6.  
  7. For Pick-Ups with 4 speed manual transmissions, the trim is held only by two screws. Unplug the connectors and remove the trim panel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the No.1 air outlet. It's attached with 2 screws.
  10.  
  11. Remove the four screws holding the combination meter. Work it out of the panel until access is gained to the rear. Disconnect the speedometer cable and remove the electrical connectors. Remove the meter assembly, placing it in a safe location out of the work area.
  12.  
  13. Remove the lower trim panel with the glove box door attached. The panel is held by 4 screws and 1 bolt.
  14.  
  15. Remove one bolt holding the lower center finish panel (around the radio and heater controls) and remove the panel.
  16.  
  17. Remove the heater control assembly. Don't forget to disconnect each control cable at the heater box. Withdraw the cables through the dash with the controller.
  18.  
  19. Remove the radio.
  20.  
  21. Remove the bolts holding the instrument panel and the entire panel assembly. Because of the nature of the rear clips, lift the panel upward at an angle. It will come loose with various items still attached; disconnect the wiring harnesses as soon as easily reached. An assistant is useful due the awkward size and location of the panel.
  22.  
  23. Once removed from the vehicle, the safety pad, heater ducts and assorted brackets may be removed if desired.
  24.  

To install:
  1. Assemble the instrument panel, safety pad and other items removed. Fit the panel into place, connect the wiring and secure the retaining bolts. Make certain the panel is flush and level. The heater vent ducts must match up exactly with no leaks. Make any needed adjustments now.
  2.  
  3. Install the radio.
  4.  
  5. Install the heater controls.
  6.  
  7. Install the lower center finish panel. Don't forget the screw.
  8.  
  9. Install the No.2 lower trim panel with the glove box door.
  10.  
  11. Place the combination meter loosely in place and connect the speedometer cable and wiring harnesses. Fit the meter into place and install the retaining screws.
  12.  
  13. Bolt down the left air outlet.
  14.  
  15. Install the meter hood and finish panel. Install the screws and make certain all the vents and ductwork align. Check that each wiring connector is correctly placed.
  16.  
  17. Install the heater control trim plate.
  18.  
  19. Connect the air duct to air outlet No. 2.
  20.  
  21. Attach the No. 1 lower finish panel.
  22.  
  23. Install the ignition key cylinder cover.
  24.  
  25. Install the lower center instrument panel cover.
  26.  
  27. Attach the cowl side trim (kick panels).
  28.  
  29. Secure the hood release and bracket.
  30.  
  31. Install the steering column covers.
  32.  
  33. Install the steering wheel.
  34.  
  35. Connect the negative battery cable.
  36.  
  37. Start the engine, allowing it to idle. Check the function of each dash component including all switches, heater and A/C output, speaker operation and dashboard warning lamps and instruments.
  38.  

1996 MODELS

See Figures 3, 4 and 5

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel.

  1. Remove the cowl side trim and the front door scuff plate.

  1. Unbolt the lower finish panel, then remove the hood and fuel tank release lever screws.
  2.  
  3. Remove the starter switch bezel.

  1. Detach the No. 2 and No. 1 heater-to-register duct.
  2.  
  3. Unscrew the cluster finish panel, then remove.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the harness for the combination meter, then unscrew and remove.
  6.  
  7. Remove the A/C switch, heater control knob and heater control panel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 2 mounting screws. Using a flat bladed tool, remove the panel.
  10.  
  11. Unplug the connectors. Separate the A/C control cable from the unit.
  12.  
  13. Remove the glove compartment door.
  14.  
  15. Remove the glove box lamp. Remove the bolts and the panel.
  16.  
  17. Remove the glove compartment door reinforcement.
  18.  
  19. Unhook the heater register duct. Remove the radio and side bracket.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the air bag harness.
  22.  
  23. Remove the bolts in the upper portion of the glove box.
  24.  
  25. Remove the defroster nozzle.
  26.  
  27. Remove the instrument panel reinforcement.
  28.  

To install:
  1. Attach the instrument panel reinforcement.
  2.  
  3. Install the defroster nozzle.
  4.  
  5. Bolt in the upper portion of the glove box.
  6.  
  7. Plug in the air bag harness.
  8.  
  9. Install the radio and hook-up the heater register duct.
  10.  
  11. Install the glove compartment door reinforcement.
  12.  
  13. Install the glove box lamp. Attach the bolts for the panel.
  14.  
  15. Install the glove box door.
  16.  
  17. Attach the A/C control cable. Plug the connectors.
  18.  
  19. Install the center cluster finish panel.
  20.  
  21. Attach the harness to the combination meter, then attach to the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Tighten the cluster finish panel.
  24.  
  25. Attach the No. 2 and No. 1 heater-to-register duct.
  26.  
  27. Install the starter switch bezel.
  28.  
  29. Install the lower finish panel, then attach the hood and fuel tank release lever.
  30.  
  31. Install the cowl side trim and the front door scuff plate.
  32.  
  33. Install the steering wheel.
  34.  
  35. Connect the negative battery cable.
  36.  

T100

See Figures 6 and 7

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front pillar garnish.
  4.  
  5. Unscrew the front door scuff plate and the cowl side trims.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering wheel.
  8.  

  1. Remove the following:

    Steering column cover
     
    Hood lock release lever
     
    Lower finish panel No. 1
     
    Combination switch
     
    Glove box door
     
    Lower finish panel No. 2.
     
    Lower center panel
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the screws retaining the center cluster finish panel, then detach the harness from the unit.
  4.  
  5. Remove the stereo opening cover.
  6.  
  7. Unscrew the combination meter from the dash.
  8.  
  9. Remove the following:

    No. 1 register
     
    Duct heater-to-register No. 1
     
    Duct heater-to-register No. 2
     
    Glove compartment door reinforcement
     
    Brace for the No. 1 and No. 2 registers
     

  10.  
  11. Detach the harness connections for the instrument panel, then remove the 2 bolts from the panel.
  12.  
  13. Unbolt the No. 3 brace, then remove the reinforcement.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Attach the reinforcement, then the No. 3 brace.
  2.  
  3. Attach the harness connections for the instrument panel, then tighten the 2 bolts for the panel.
  4.  
  5. Install the following:

    No. 1 register
     
    Duct heater-to-register No. 1
     
    Duct heater-to-register No. 2
     
    Glove compartment door reinforcement
     
    Brace for the No. 1 and No. 2 registers
     

  6.  
  7. Tighten the combination meter into place.
  8.  
  9. Attach the stereo opening cover.
  10.  
  11. Attach the cluster harness, then install and tighten the screws that retain the center cluster finish panel.

  1. Install the following:

    Steering column cover
     
    Hood lock release lever
     
    Lower finish panel No. 1
     
    Combination switch
     
    Glove box door
     
    Lower finish panel No. 2.
     
    Lower center panel
     

  2.  
  3. Install the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Attach, then tighten the front door scuff plate and the cowl side trims.
  6.  
  7. Place the front pillar garnish into position and tighten.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

Tacoma

See Figures 8, 9 and 10

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel.
  4.

  1. Remove the following:

    Steering column cover
     
    Hood lock release lever
     
    Combination switch
     
    Fuse box cover

  3. Remove the lower left hand finish panel.

    Starter switch bezel
     
    No. 2 heater-to-register
     
    Steering column
     
    Clock
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the cup holder and the heater control knobs.

  1. With the aide of a flat bladed tool, remove the heater control panel.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the hazard harness.
  4.  
  5. Remove the mounting screws for the center cluster finish panel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the heater control assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the radio.
  10.  
  11. Remove the screws mounting the cluster finish panel, then lower the panel.
  12.  
  13. Remove the combination meter screws, the speedometer cable. Disconnect the harness.
  14.  
  15. Remove the No. 1 register and the No. 1 heater-to-register duct.
  16.  
  17. Unscrew the glove compartment door and the reinforcement, then remove.
  18.  
  19. Unbolt the lower center instrument cover and remove the cover.
  20.  
  21. Separate the lower No. 2 finish panel from the dash.
  22.  
  23. Lift out the ashtray box and receptacle retainer.
  24.  
  25. Remove the stereo opening cover and the cigarette lighter harness.
  26.  
  27. Unbolt the side bracket for the instrument panel, then remove the instrument panel.
  28.  
  29. Unbolt the No. 1 and No. 2 brace for the instrument reinforcement. Remove the center heater-to-register duct.
  30.  
  31. Pull out the defroster nozzle.
  32.  
  33. Separate the reinforcement from the dahs.
  34.  
  35. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  36.  
  37. Connect the negative battery cable.
  38.  

Land Cruiser
1989-90 MODELS
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the Nos. 2 and 3 air ducts. These are above the driver's knees under the dash.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the throttle cable from the accelerator pedal and retainer. Remove the cable set nut and remove the cable.
  8.  
  9. Remove the hood release lever and the fuel lid opener lever.
  10.  
  11. Remove the heater control lever knobs. Remove the ash tray.
  12.  
  13. Remove the five screws and two clips holding the center instrument finish panel. Remove the panel and disconnect the wiring harnesses.
  14.  
  15. Remove the seven screws holding the instrument cluster trim panel. Loosen the panel, disconnect the wiring and unhook the speedometer cable.
  16.  
  17. Remove the audio unit.
  18.  
  19. Remove the glove box door. Remove the courtesy switch and light.
  20.  
  21. Remove the four screws holding the glove box; remove the latch striker and remove the glove box.
  22.  
  23. Remove the mounting bolt holding the ECU; pull it out gently and disconnect the wire harness. Place the computer in a very safe location out of the work area.
  24.  
  25. Remove air ducts Nos. 1, 3 and 4; each is held by a single screw.
  26.  
  27. At the side defrosters, remove only the lower screw and disconnect the defroster hose.
  28.  
  29. Remove the four screws and four nuts holding the safety pad. Loosen two clips and remove the pad.
  30.  
  31. Remove the heater control panel.
  32.  
  33. Unplug the electrical connectors at the mirror control switch, the dimmer and 4WD control.
  34.  
  35. Remove the fuse box; it's attached by two screws.
  36.  
  37. Remove the two upper side mounting bolts holding the steering column.
  38.  
  39. The instrument panel is held by 15 bolts. Once the bolts are removed, move the panel towards the rear of the vehicle to remove it. Once removed, the various components still on the panel may be removed if desired.
  40.  

To install:
  1. Assemble the instrument panel with any items removed. Fit the panel into place, connect the wiring and secure the retaining bolts. Make certain the panel is flush and level. The heater vent ducts must match up exactly with no leaks. Make any needed adjustments now.
  2.  
  3. Install the upper side mounting bolts holding the steering column.
  4.  
  5. Install the fuse box and cover.
  6.  
  7. Connect the mirror control switch, the dimmer and the 4WD switch connectors.
  8.  
  9. Connect the cables and install the heater controls.
  10.  
  11. Install the safety pad, making sure the clips are properly seated and that the piece is properly aligned.
  12.  
  13. Connect the side defroster hoses to the grilles and install the lower screws.
  14.  
  15. Connect the Nos. 1, 3, and 4 air ducts.
  16.  
  17. Connect the harness to the ECU and install the unit. Make sure the harness is connected squarely and firmly.
  18.  
  19. Install the glove box and striker. Connect the switch and light, and install the glove box door.
  20.  
  21. Install the audio unit.
  22.  
  23. Place the instrument finish panel in place. Connect the speedometer cable and the electrical harnesses. Install the panel and the retaining screws.
  24.  
  25. Install the center lower trim panel, connecting the wiring as needed. Install the ash tray and install the heater control knobs.
  26.  
  27. Install the hood release and fuel door levers.
  28.  
  29. Connect the throttle cable to the accelerator pedal.
  30.  
  31. Install the Nos. 2 and 3 air ducts.
  32.  
  33. Install the steering column covers.
  34.  
  35. Install the steering wheel.
  36.  
  37. Connect the negative battery cable.
  38.  
  39. Start the engine, allowing it to idle. Check the function of each dash component including all switches, heater and A/C output, speaker operation and dashboard warning lamps and instruments.
  40.  

1991-95 MODELS

See Figures 11 and 12

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel.
  4.

  1. Apply strips of protective tape on the inside of each windshield pillar. This will protect the trim during removal.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers.
  4.  
  5. Remove the hood release and fuel door release levers.
  6.  
  7. Remove the four screws holding the lower trim panel below the steering column.
  8.  
  9. Remove the heater duct running to the left dash outlet (No. 2). The duct is the one under the dash, above the driver's knees.

  1. Remove the combination switch from the steering column. Refer to Chassis Electrical .
  2.  
  3. Remove the turn signal bracket from the steering column; it's the piece just below the combination switch.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ashtray and remove the ashtray holder.
  6.  
  7. Remove the three screws holding the lower instrument panel trim. The trim panel is held by six clips which must be released to remove the panel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the instrument cluster trim; it is held by six screws and two clips.
  10.  
  11. Remove the four screws holding the combination meter and gently loosen it; disconnect the electrical harnesses and unhook the speedometer cable. Place the instrument cluster in a safe location out of the work area.
  12.  
  13. Remove the heater control unit.
  14.  
  15. Remove the audio unit.
  16.  
  17. Remove the front (shifter) console.
  18.  
  19. Remove the dash mounted speaker covers. Remove and disconnect the speakers.
  20.  
  21. Remove the glove compartment door.
  22.  
  23. Remove the screws holding the engine ECU; gently remove it and disconnect the wire harness. Place the ECU in a protected location out of the work area.
  24.  
  25. The instrument panel is held by 10 bolts and six screws. Remove them and remove the panel. Once removed, the safety pad, air vents, etc. may be removed if desired.
  26.  

To install:
  1. Assemble the instrument panel with any items removed. Fit the panel into place and secure the retaining bolts. Make certain the panel is flush and level. The heater vent ducts must match up exactly with no leaks. Make any needed adjustments now.
  2.  
  3. Connect the wire harness to the engine ECU. Install the ECU in the right side of the instrument panel.
  4.  
  5. Install the glove box door.
  6.  
  7. Install the speakers and the speaker covers.
  8.  
  9. Install the front console.
  10.  
  11. Install the audio unit.
  12.  
  13. Install the heater control unit. Don't forget the knobs on the levers.
  14.  
  15. Place the combination meter in position. Connect the speedometer cable and attach the wiring connectors. Make sure the electrical connectors are squarely and firmly seated. Install the meter unit.
  16.  
  17. Install the cluster trim panel. Make sure the clips are in place.
  18.  
  19. Install the lower center trim panel. All six clips must be correctly seated. Install the retaining screws.
  20.  
  21. Install the ashtray holder and the ashtray.
  22.  
  23. Install the turn signal bracket and the combination switch.
  24.  
  25. Connect the heater duct to air outlet No. 2.
  26.  
  27. Install the lower trim panel and the 4 screws.
  28.  
  29. Attach the hood and fuel door levers.
  30.  
  31. Install the steering column covers. Install the steering wheel.
  32.  
  33. Remove the protective tape from the windshield pillars.
  34.  
  35. Connect the negative battery cable.
  36.  
  37. Start the engine, allowing it to idle. Check the function of each dash component including all switches, heater and A/C output, speaker operation and dashboard warning lamps and instruments.
  38.  

1996 MODELS

CAUTION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel.
  4.

  1. Unscrew the lower trim panel below the steering column.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower instrument panel.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the No. 2 heater-to-register duct.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the DLC3 and the fuse block.
  8.  
  9. Detach the No. 2 center cluster finish panel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the steering column.
  12.  
  13. Unbolt the cluster finish panel, then the combination meter.
  14.  
  15. Remove the center cluster finish panel assembly with the clock attached.
  16.  
  17. With the aid of a taped prytool, take off the 2 claws, then remove the cup holder hole cover.
  18.  
  19. Remove the ashtray.
  20.  
  21. Unscrew the center cluster finish panel with the heater control assembly, then disconnect the harness.
  22.  
  23. Remove the screws retaining the heater control assembly from the center cluster finish panel.
  24.  
  25. Remove the following:

    Radio
     
    Glove compartment door
     
    Speaker panel
     
    Speaker
     
    Front console box
     
    Rear console box
     

  26.  
  27. Loosen and remove the 5 screws and 9 bolts holding the instrument panel.
  28.  
  29. Remove the lower instrument panel reinforcement, then the No. 1 brace and the instrument panel.
  30.  

To install:
  1. Attach the No. 1 brace and lower instrument panel, then the instrument panel reinforcement.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the 5 screws and 9 bolts holding the instrument panel.
  4.  
  5. Install the following:

    Radio
     
    Glove compartment door
     
    Speaker panel
     
    Speaker
     
    Front console box
     
    Rear console box
     

  6.  
  7. Tighten the screws retaining the heater control assembly to the center cluster finish panel.
  8.  
  9. Connect the harness to the heater control, then attach the center cluster finish panel with the heater control assembly.
  10.  
  11. Reinstall the ashtray.
  12.  
  13. Place the cup holder hole cover into position.
  14.  
  15. Install the center cluster finish panel assembly with the clock attached.
  16.  
  17. Install the combination meter.
  18.  
  19. Attach the cluster finish panel.
  20.  
  21. Install the steering column.
  22.  
  23. Attach the No. 2 center cluster finish panel.
  24.  
  25. Install the DLC3 and the fuse block.
  26.  
  27. Insert and attach the No. 2 heater-to-register duct.
  28.  
  29. Install and tighten down the lower instrument panel.
  30.  
  31. Place the lower trim panel below the steering column, then tighten.
  32.  
  33. Attach the fuse box opening cover.
  34.  
  35. Place into position, then tighten down the hood release and fuel door release levers.
  36.  
  37. Attach the upper and lower steering column covers.
  38.  
  39. Install the steering wheel.
  40.  
  41. Connect the negative battery cable.
  42.
