  12.
  13. Remove the shoe hold-down spring cups, spring and pin.
  14.
  15. If necessary, remove and disassemble the parking brake bellcrank assembly as follows:
    1. Using a flat-bladed tool, remove the C-washer.
    2.
    3. Remove the pin, then separate the parking brake cable from the bellcrank.
    4.
    5. Remove the clip. Next remove the pin and clip, then disconnect the cable.
    6.
    7. Remove the tension spring. Unbolt the parking bellcrank assembly.

    12.

  16.

To install:
  1. Assemble and install the parking brake bellcrank as follows:
    1. Apply grease to the rotating parts of the bellcrank.
    2.
    3. Install the parking brake bellcrank to the bellcrank bracket.
    4.
    5. Install the pin with a new C-clip and tighten it.
    6.
    7. Install the bellcrank boot to the parking brake bracket.
    8.
    9. Install the parking brake bellcrank and dust cover on the backing plate.
    10.

  2.
  3. Apply high-temperature grease to the brake backing plate and the threads of the adjuster.
  4.
  5. Position the parking brake lever and the automatic adjuster. Use new clips and tighten the C-clip.
  6.
  7. Connect the parking brake cable to the front shoe lever. Connect the other side of the cable to the bellcrank. Position the front shoe so the upper end is in the piston rod and install the hold-down spring and pin.
  8.
  9. Connect the anchor spring to the front shoe and then stretch it onto the rear shoe. Position the rear shoe and install the hold-down spring and pin.
  10.
  11. Install the tension spring.
  12.
  13. Install the strut with spring facing rearward.
  14.
  15. Install the front shoe return springs and then the rear spring.
  16.
  17. Install the brake disc.
  18.
  19. Connect the parking brake cable to the bellcrank assembly with the pin, wave clip and clip.
  20.
  21. Adjust the brake shoe clearance. Turn the adjuster and expand the shoes until the disc locks. Return the adjuster 8 notches.
  22.
  23. If necessary adjust the bellcrank as follows:
    1. Pull the bellcrank until all the play in the interior linkage is taken up.
    2.
    3. Screw in the bellcrank adjusting bolt to where it contacts on the dust seal.
    4.
    5. Loosen it one turn, then lock it at that position with the locknut. Install the bellcrank spring.
    6.

  24.
  25. Install the rear brake disc assembly, tighten the mounting bolts to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  26.

INSPECTION

Shoe Thickness

See Figure 1

Using a ruler, measure the thickness of the shoe lining. The standard thickness is 0.157 in. (4.0mm) and the minimum thickness is 0.039 in. (1.0mm). If the lining thickness is not within minimum thickness or less, or if there is an extremely uneven wear, replace the shoes.

Rotor Inside Diameter

See Figure 2

Using a H-gauge caliper, measure the inside diameter of the rotor. Standard inside measurement is 9.06 in. (230mm) and maximum measurement is 9.09 in. (231mm). Replace the rotor if the inside diameter is at the maximum value or more. Replace or have a machine shop grind the rotor with a lathe if it has been scored or is worn badly.

Shoe and Lever Clearance

See Figure 3

Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the parking shoe and the lever. Standard distance should be 0.0138 in. (0.35mm). If the clearance is not within the the specification, replace the shim with one of the correct size. The sizes available are 0.012 in. (0.3mm), 0.024 in. (0.6mm) and 0.035 in. (0.9mm). If necessary replace the shim, remove the parking brake lever, then install the correct size. Install the parking break lever with a new C-washer. Remeasure the clearance.
