REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



See Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4

  1. Raise the rear of the truck and support it on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the drain plug and drain the differential oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear axle shafts.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the driveshaft at the differential. On vehicles with anti-lock brakes, remove the rear speed sensor from the differential housing and disconnect the wiring harness clip from the housing.
  8.  
  9. On vehicles with differential lock, disconnect the harness and tube.
  10.  
  11. Remove the mounting bolts and lift out the differential carrier assembly.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Install a new gasket and position the carrier assembly into the axle housing. Tighten the mounting bolts to:

    Pick-Up, 4Runner, Tacoma and T100 with differential lock-18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Pick-Up, 4Runner, Tacoma and T100 without differential lock-54 ft. lbs. (73 Nm)
     
    1989-91 Land Cruiser-34 ft. lbs. (47 Nm)
     
    1992-96 Land Cruiser-54 ft. lbs. (73 Nm)
     

  2.  
  3. Connect the driveshaft to the companion flange on the differential. Install the rear speed sensor if it was removed; install the wire harness clips.
  4.  
  5. Install the rear axle shafts.
  6.  
  7. Lower the truck and fill the differential with gear oil. Drive the truck and check for any leaks.
  8.
