All vehicles require the replacement of the fuel filler cap gasket at 60,000 miles (96,558 km). The gasket is important in sealing the filler neck and keeping the vapors from the tank routed through the vapor emission system. On 1989 Land Cruisers the gasket is held in with 4 small screws and a retaining plate which must be removed. The later models eliminate the screws and retainer; gently pry the gasket off with your fingers or a tool. Install the new gasket and make certain it is not twisted or crimped.
