REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



5VZ-FE Engine

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

  1. Depressurize the fuel system.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the cables:

    Accelerator-1
     
    Throttle cable on A/T-2
     
    Cruise control actuator-3

  1. Remove the air cleaner hose.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the throttle position sensor harness.
  4.  
  5. Separate the idle air control (IAC) connector.
  6.  
  7. Tag and disconnect the following vacuum hoses from the throttle body:

    Throttle opener
     
    EGR vacuum modulator
     

  8.  
  9. Tag and disconnect the following hoses from the idle air control valve:
  10.  
  11. Tag and disconnect the following hoses from the idle air control valve:

    Water bypass; on EGR vehicles, from the EGR valve
     
    Water bypass; without EGR, from the bypass pipe
     
    Water hose from the intake manifold
     
    Air assist
     

  12.  
  13. Disconnect the ignition coil wiring.
  14.  
  15. Unbolt the throttle body, remove and discard of the gasket.
  16.

To install:
  1. Place a new gasket on the air intake chamber facing the protrusion upwards, tighten to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).

  1. Attach the ignition coil wiring.
  2.  
  3. Attach the following hoses to the idle air control valve:

    Water bypass; on EGR vehicles, to the EGR valve
     
    Water bypass; without EGR, to the bypass pipe
     
    Water hose from the intake manifold
     
    Air assist
     

  4.  
  5. Connect the vacuum hoses to the throttle body:

    Throttle opener
     
    EGR vacuum modulator
     

  6.  
  7. Secure the Idle Air Control (IAC) and throttle position sensor connectors.
  8.  
  9. Attach the air cleaner hose.
  10.  
  11. Connect the following cables:

    Accelerator-1
     
    Throttle cable on A/T-2
     
    Cruise control actuator-3
     

  12.  
  13. Fill the cooling system with a mixture of water and antifreeze.
  14.  

1FZ-FE Engine
  1. Depressurize the fuel system.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the PCV and air cleaner hoses.
  6.  
  7. Remove the control cables from the throttle body.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the throttle position sensor and idle air control wiring.
  10.  
  11. Tag and disconnect all vacuum and water hoses leading to the throttle body.
  12.  
  13. Remove the bolts, and disconnect the throttle body from the air intake chamber.
  14.  
  15. Remove the throttle body gasket and discard.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the both of the water bypass hoses from the throttle body, then remove the unit.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Attach the water bypass hoses to the throttle body.
  2.  
  3. Install the throttle body with a new gasket, then tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install all of the previously tagged vacuum and water hoses.
  6.  
  7. Attach the throttle position sensor and idle air control wiring.
  8.  
  9. Install the control cables to the throttle body.
  10.  
  11. Connect the PCV and air cleaner hoses.
  12.  
  13. Fill the cooling system, start the engine and top off.
  14.  

INSPECTION



Always clean the throttle body once removed from the vehicle. Wash and clean the cast parts with a soft brush in carburetor cleaner. Using compressed air, clean all of the passages and apertures in the throttle body.

To prevent any damage, do not clean the throttle position sensor.

ADJUSTMENTS



Throttle Position Sensor
5VZ-FE ENGINE

See Figures 4, 5 and 6

  1. Inspect the sensor with the throttle body off the vehicle, apply vacuum to the throttle opener.
    1. Insert a thickness gauge 0.13 in. (0.32mm) or 0.021 in. (0.54mm) between the throttle stop screw and the stop lever.
    2.  
    3. Using a ohmmeter, measure the resistance between each terminal.
    4.

  1. To adjust the sensor, loosen the 2 setscrews of the sensor.
  2.  
  3. Apply vacuum to the throttle opener, then insert a 0.017 in. (0.43mm) gauge between the stop screw and lever.
  4.  
  5. Connect a test probe of the ohmmeter to terminals IDL and E2 of the sensor.
  6.  
  7. Gradually turn the sensor clockwise until the ohmmeter deflects, then secure it with the 2 setscrews.
  8.  
  9. Recheck the continuity of the terminals IDL and E2.
  10.

1FZ-FE ENGINE

See Figures 7, 8 and 9

  1. Inspect the sensor with the throttle body off the vehicle, apply vacuum to the throttle opener.
    1. Insert a thickness gauge 0.020 in. (0.50mm) or 0.030 in. (0.75mm) between the throttle stop screw and the stop lever.
    2.  
    3. Using a ohmmeter, measure the resistance between each terminal. Check the chart for specifications.
    4.

  1. To adjust the sensor, loosen the 2 setscrews of the sensor.

  4.  
  5. Connect a test probe of the ohmmeter to terminals IDL and E2 of the sensor.
  6.  
  7. Gradually turn the sensor clockwise until the ohmmeter deflects, then secure it with the 2 setscrews.
  8.  
  9. Recheck the continuity of the terminals IDL and E2.

Throttle Valve
  1. Apply vacuum to the throttle opener.
  2.  
  3. Check that there is no clearance between the throttle stop screw and the throttle lever when the valve is fully closed. The fully closed angle should be 10°.
