Wheel Lug Studs

REPLACEMENT



Front
  1. Elevate and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the brake line from the front caliper, and plug the line immediately.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake caliper.
  8.  


CAUTION
Brake pads and shoes may contain asbestos, which has been determined to be a cancer causing agent. Never clean the brake surfaces with compressed air. Avoid inhaling any dust from brake surfaces. When cleaning brakes, use commercially available brake cleaning fluids.

  1. For vehicles with free-wheeling hubs, remove the hub. For all other vehicles, remove the cap from the flange and remove the center bolt. On Land Cruisers, remove the snapring.
  2.  
  3. Remove the 6 mounting nuts.
  4.  
  5. Use a brass bar and hammer to tap on the bolt heads and remove the cone washers.
  6.  
  7. On Land Cruisers, pull out the flange. For other vehicles, install and tighten 2 bolts, using them to force the flange loose.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lockwasher from the hub.
  10.  
  11. Remove the locknut and the lockwasher.
  12.  
  13. Remove the adjusting nut.
  14.  
  15. Remove the axle hub with the brake disc attached.
  16.  


CAUTION

  1. Place matchmarks on the hub and brake disc. The units must be reinstalled in their exact relationship as before.
  2.  
  3. Remove the bolts holding the disc to the hub.
  4.  
  5. Install a lug nut on the lug. Using a brass bar and a press, remove the hub bolt.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Using a brass bar and a press, install the hub bolt. Reverse the disc and using a press install the new lug. Make sure it is firmly and completely seated in the disc.
  2.  
  3. Align the matchmarks and place the hub on the disc. Install the 6 bolts, tightening them to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the disc and hub.
  6.  
  7. Install the brake caliper.
  8.  
  9. Attach the brake line to the caliper.
  10.  
  11. Bleed the brake system.
  12.  
  13. Install the wheel.
  14.  
  15. Lower the vehicle to the ground then tighten the lug nuts.
  16.  

Rear
  1. Elevate and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake drum.
  6.  


CAUTION

  1. Use a lug extractor such as tool 09650-17011 or equivalent to press out the lug.
  2.  

This can be done with the axle and brakes in place if you're careful.

To install:
  1. Fit the new lug into the hole. Place a flat washer over the lug and install a lug nut on the new lug. Use a hand wrench to tighten the nut, drawing the lug into position. Remove the nut when the lug is fully seated.

  3. Install the brake drum.
  4.  
  5. Install the wheel.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
