REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



4Runner

Please refer to the procedure under "4WD FRONT SUSPENSION" in this section.

Tacoma
  1. Raise and properly support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheel.
  4.  
  5. Detach the shock absorber lower mount by removing the two bolts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the retainer nut, retainer, cushion and shock absorber.
  8.  
  9. Detach the cushion retainer from the shock absorber.
  10.  
  11. Compress the coil spring with a commercially available spring compressor.
  12.  
  13. Detach the stabilizer bar.
  14.  
  15. Support the upper suspension arm and steering knuckle securely.
  16.  
  17. Remove the cotter pin.
  18.  
  19. Loosen and remove the nut.
  20.  
  21. Using a ball joint removal tool, detach the lower ball joint from the lower control arm.
  22.  
  23. Loosen the suspension arm set bolt.
  24.  
  25. Remove the suspension arm set bolt nut.
  26.  
  27. Remove the nut from the strut bar front set bolt.
  28.  
  29. Pull out both set bolts.
  30.  
  31. Remove the lower suspension arm and coil spring.
  32.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal. Note the following torque specifications:
    1. Strut bar front set bolt: 221 ft. lbs. (300 Nm)
    2.  
    3. Lower suspension arm set bolt: 148 ft. lbs. (200 Nm)
    4.  
    5. Lower ball joint nut: 80 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
    6.  
    7. Lug nuts: 83 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).

Tundra
  1. Raise and properly support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the strut absorber nut and washer from the lower control arm.
  6.  


WARNING
Do NOT remove the bolt at this time.

  1. While slowly lowering the front suspension, remove the lower bolt from the strut absorber assembly.
  2.  
  3. Support the strut.
  4.  
  5. Remove the three nuts from the top of the strut tower.
  6.  
  7. Lower the strut out of the wheel well.
  8.  
  9. Remove the coil spring by compressing the spring with a commercially available spring compressor.
  10.  
  11. Compress the coil spring until it is clear of the strut assembly at both ends.
  12.  
  13. Remove the center nut from the strut.
  14.  
  15. Detach the retainers, cushions, suspension support and coil spring.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Compress the coil spring.
  2.  
  3. Install the coil spring on to the strut absorber.
  4.  

Fit the lower end of the coil spring into the gap of the spring seat of the strut absorber.

  1. Install the cushions, retainers, and suspension support to the rod.
  2.  
  3. Install and snug the center nut of the strut.
  4.  
  5. Align the top of the strut so that two of the bolts are parallel with the direction of the lower strut bushing.
  6.  
  7. Remove the spring compressor.
  8.  
  9. Torque the center nut to 22 ft. lbs. (29Nm).
  10.  
  11. The remainder is the reverse of removal. Please note the following torque specifications:

    Torque the three upper strut to body nuts: 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
     
    Torque the lower strut absorber mounting bolt to 101 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
     
    Wheel lug nuts: 83 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
