To check the lower ball joint for wear, jack up the front of the vehicle and support it with stands. Remove excess play from the other suspension parts (wheel bearings, tie rods, etc.). Have an assistant press the brake pedal; Move the lower suspension arm up and down, checking that the lower ball joint has minimal play, if any. The maximum allowable vertical play is 0.079 in. (2.3mm). If the play is greater, replace the ball joint. The upper ball joint is subject to the same limit on trucks; the 4Runner upper ball joint must have no play at all. The upper ball joint is tested by moving the wheel and tire up and down.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Raise and support the vehicle on jack stands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheel.
  4.  
  5. Detach the steering knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 4 bolts to the lower ball joint.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower ball joint.
  10.  
  11. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  12.  

4Runner and Tacoma
  1. Raise and properly support the vehicle with jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheel.
  4.  
  5. Detach the tie rod end.
  6.  
  7. Support the lower control arm with a suitable jack.
  8.  
  9. On the lower ball joint, separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle. Throw out the old cotter pin.
  10.  
  11. Remove the cotter pin and nut from the lower ball joint. Discard the cotter pin.
  12.  
  13. With a ball joint remover, separate the ball joint from the lower control arm.
  14.  
  15. Remove the four bolts that mount the lower ball joint to the lower control arm.
  16.  
  17. While lifting up the upper control arm, remove the lower ball joint.
  18.  
  19. Securely support the upper control arm and steering knuckle.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Install the ball joint with the mounting nuts and bolts.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the nut to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm) on the Tacoma or to 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm) on the 4Runner. Install a new cotter pin in the hole.
  4.  
  5. Attach the tie rod end tightening the nut to 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm) on the Tacoma or to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm) on the 4Runner.
  6.  
  7. Install a new cotter pin.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the lower ball joint set bolts to 116 ft. lbs. (160 Nm) on the Tacoma or to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm) on 4Runner.
  10.  
  11. Remove the jack slowly, making sure everything is secure and in place.
  12.  
  13. Install the wheel, lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts.
  14.  
  15. Check the ABS speed sensor signal and front wheel alignment.
  16.  

T100
  1. Raise the vehicle and support it with jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheel.
  4.  
  5. Support the lower control arm with a floor jack and remove the steering knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the mounting bolts and remove the lower ball joint from the lower control arm.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Attach the lower ball joint and tighten the nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the steering knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Install the wheels and lower the truck.
  6.  
  7. Check the ABS speed sensor signal and front wheel alignment.
  8.
