  1. Flip the ball joint stud back-and-forth five times.
  2.  
  3. Install the nut.
  4.  
  5. Turn the nut, with a torque wrench, one turn (continuously) each 24 seconds.
  6.  
  7. Take the torque reading on the fifth turn.
  8.  
  9. Turning torque should be 639 inch lbs. (0.74.4 Nm).
  10.  

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Raise and support the vehicle on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Detach the steering knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Remove four nuts and bolts from the upper ball joint.
  8.  
  9. Remove the upper ball joint from the suspension arm.
  10.  
  11. Installation is the reverse of removal.

4Runner

Please refer to the appropriate procedure under "4WD FRONT SUSPENSION" in this section.

Tacoma and Tundra
  1. Remove the front wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering knuckle with the axle hub.
  4.

  1. Separate the upper ball joint as follows:
    1. Remove the wire and boot.
    2.  
    3. Using a snapring expander, remove the snapring.
    4.  
    5. With a ball joint remover and a deep socket, remove the upper ball joint.
    6.

To install:

  1. With the aid of the ball joint installer and a socket wrench, install the ball joint.
  2.  
  3. Using a snapring expander, install a new snapring.
  4.  
  5. Apply multi-purpose grease, then install a new boot. Fix it with a new wire.
  6.  
  7. Install the steering knuckle with the axle hub.
  8.  
  9. Install the front wheel, lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts.
  10.  
  11. Have the alignment checked at a reputable repair facility.
  12.
