Upper Control Arm

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Tacoma and Tundra
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheel.
  4.  
  5. On the Tundra, remove the fender apron seal to gain better access to the upper control arm.
  6.  
  7. Removed the ABS sped sensor and wire harness.
  8.  
  9. On the Tundra, remove the brake and fuel line clamp.
  10.  
  11. Remove the stabilizer bar link.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the steering knuckle from the upper bar joint.
  14.  
  15. Loosen the two bolts, and then remove the front and rear alignment adjusting shims.
  16.  
  17. Make note of the number and thickness of the front and rear shims.
  18.  
  19. Unbolt the upper control arm.
  20.  
  21. Remove the bolts, nuts and upper ball joint from the arm.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Attach the ball joint to the arm, tighten to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
  2.  

Do NOT lose the camber adjusting shims. Record the position and thickness of the camber shims so that these can be reinstalled to there original locations. Install the equal number and thickness of shims into there locations.

  1. Install the arm to the vehicle, with the shims, and then tighten the mounting bolts to 94 ft. lbs. (130 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Attach the steering knuckle to the upper ball joint.
  4.  
  5. Install the stabilizer bar link.
  6.  
  7. Install the ABS speed sensor and wire harness.
  8.  
  9. Place the wheel into position, hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle; tighten the lug nuts to 83 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Have the alignment checked at a reputable repair facility.
  14.  

T100
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheel(s).
  4.  
  5. Remove the front brake caliper.
  6.  
  7. On models with ABS, disconnect the ABS speed sensor wire from the upper control arm.
  8.  
  9. Support the lower control arm with a jack. Remove the nuts and disconnect ball joint from the upper control arm.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolts and camber adjusting shims.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper control arm.
  14.  

Do NOT lose the camber adjusting shims. Record the position and thickness of the camber shims so that these can be reinstalled to there original locations. Install the equal number and thickness of shims into there locations.

To install:

  1. Attach the upper control arm with the shims in there correct positions.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the bolts to 71 ft. lbs. (96 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the nuts to the upper control arm; tighten to 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Attach the ABS speed sensor and harness to the upper control arm.
  8.  
  9. Install the brake caliper.
  10.  
  11. Install the wheel, lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the lug nuts to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Bleed the brake system.
  16.  
  17. Have the alignment checked at a reputable repair facility.
  18.  

CONTROL ARM BUSHING REPLACEMENT

  1. Use a chisel and hammer to pry up the flange of the bushing.
  2.  
  3. Use a press to remove the bushing.
  4.  

To install:

  1. Install the bushing with a press.
  2.  
  3. Make sure that the bushing is fully seated against the control arm.
  4.
