Land Cruiser
  1. The upper ball joint is an integral part of the upper control arm and cannot be replaced separately. If the ball joint fails, the entire control arm must be replaced.

  1. Remove the front wheel.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the upper ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper ball joint four mounting nuts. Separate the ball joint from the upper control arm.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Attach the ball joint mounting nuts, tighten to 25 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Attach the ball joint to the steering knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Install the front wheel, lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts.
  6.  
  7. Have the alignment checked at a reputable repair facility.

  1. Remove the front wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering knuckle with the axle hub.
  4.  
  5. Separate the upper ball joint as follows:
    1. Remove the wire and boot.
    2.  
    3. Using a snapring expander, remove the snapring.
    4.  
    5. With a ball joint remover and a deep socket, remove the upper ball joint.
    6.  

  6.  

To install:

  1. With the aid of the ball joint installer and a socket wrench, install the ball joint.
  2.  
  3. Using a snapring expander, install a new snapring.
  4.  
  5. Apply multi-purpose grease, then install a new boot. Fix it with a new wire.
  6.  
  7. Install the steering knuckle with the axle hub.
  8.  
  9. Install the front wheel, lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts.
  10.  
  11. Have the alignment checked at a reputable repair facility.
