2RZ-FE and 3RZ-FE Engines

The late 2RZ-FE and all 3RZ-FE engines have an electronic ignition system using no distributor but it does use two coils, each with dual-output terminals, and spark plug cables from the coils to the spark plugs.

  1. Disconnect the high-tension (spark plug wires) cables from the ignition coils.
  2.  
  3. Detach the ignition coil electrical connectors.
  4.  
  5. Using an ohmmeter, measure the secondary coil resistance between the positive (+) and high-tension terminals. The readings should be:
    1. Cold: 9.716.7 k-ohms
    2.  
    3. Hot: 12.419.6 k-ohms
    4.  

  6.  
  7. If the resistance is not as specified, replace the ignition coil.
  8.  

5VZ-FE Engine

The 5VZ-FE engine has an electronic distributorless ignition system, with six separate coils, each with their own spark plug wire.

  1. If there is no spark at the spark plugs, check for power to the ignition coil, as follows:
    1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
    2.  
    3. Check that there is battery voltage at the ignition coil positive (+) terminal.
    4.

  3. If there is battery voltage at the ignition coil positive (+) terminal, but no spark at the plugs, the coils should be checked.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the high-tension (spark plug wires) cables and the smaller ignition harness connectors from the ignition coils.
  6.  
  7. Using an ohmmeter, measure the primary coil resistance between the positive (+) and negative () terminals. The reading should be:
    1. Cold: 0.671.05 ohms
    2.  
    3. Hot: 0.851.23 ohms
    4.  

  8.  
  9. Using an ohmmeter, measure the secondary coil resistance between the positive (+) and high-tension terminals. The readings should be:
    1. Cold: 9.316.0 k-ohms
    2.  
    3. Hot: 11.718.8 k-ohms
    4.

  11. If the resistance is not as specified, replace the ignition coil.

2UZ-FE Engine

The 2UZ-FE engine has an electronic distributorless ignition system, with eight separate coils and no spark plug wires. Each spark plug has its own coil on top of the connector.

  1. If there is no spark at the spark plugs, check for power to the ignition coil, as follows:
    1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
    2.  
    3. Check that there is battery voltage at the ignition coil positive (+) terminal.
    4.

  3. If there is battery voltage at the ignition coil positive (+) terminal, but no spark at the plugs, the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor and Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor should be checked. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): Drivability and Emission Controls.

2RZ-FE and 3RZ-FE Engines

This procedure may vary depending on Model Year and chassis. The following should suffice for most all Toyota applications using these engines.

  1. Remove the air cleaner hose.
  2.  
  3. Tag for identification, then disconnect the high-tension (spark plug) cables from the ignition coils.
  4.  
  5. Unplug the connectors from the ignition coils.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 4 mounting bolts and remove the coils from their bracket.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the coils in the reverse order of removal. Make certain the correct coil is replaced in the same place where it was removed. Tighten the mounting bolts to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Attach the plug wires to the coils.
  4.  
  5. Install the air cleaner hose.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for proper operation.
  8.  

5VZ-FE and 2UZ-FE Engines

This procedure may vary depending on model, year, and chassis. The following should suffice for most all Toyota applications using these engines.

  1. Remove the air cleaner hose.
  2.  
  3. If equipped, tag for identification, then disconnect the high-tension (spark plug) cables from the ignition coils.
  4.  
  5. Unplug the connectors from the ignition coils.
  6.  
  7. On these engines, the coils mount to the left side cylinder head. Remove the 3 mounting bolts and remove the coils from the cylinder head
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the coils in the reverse order of removal. Make certain the correct coil is replaced in the same place where it was removed. Tighten the mounting bolts to 69 inch lbs. (7.8 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Attach the plug wires to the coils, if applicable.
  4.  
  5. Install the air cleaner hose.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for proper operation.
