REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



These procedures allow the control unit to be pulled forward out of the dash. Generally, this is sufficient to allow inspection of the lever functions, etc. If the control head is to be removed, the cables must be disconnected from each lever. In some cases, it may be easier to disconnect the cable at the heater linkage and pull the cable through the dash.

  1. Remove the center console cover and the center finish panel.
  2.  
  3. Pull off the heater control knobs.
  4.  
  5. If equipped, remove the A/C switch.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the control panel screws.
  8.  
  9. Remove the glove compartment door and lower finish panel.
  10.  
  11. Tag and disconnect the heater control cables.
  12.  
  13. Remove the screw and pull out the heater control assembly, then disconnect the harness.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Attach all of the heater cables to their proper locations and adjust, if needed.
  2.  
  3. Attach the harness and install the control assembly in the dash.
  4.  
  5. Install the lower finish panel and glove box door.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the control panel retainers. If equipped, install the A/C switch.
  8.  
  9. Push on the heater knobs, then install the center console cover and center finish panel.
  10.

  1. Remove the lower finish panel.
  2.  
  3. Detach the glove box door.
  4.  
  5. Remove the second lower finish panel.
  6.  
  7. Detach the center cluster finish panel
  8.  
  9. Pull out the heater control knobs.
  10.  
  11. Remove the heater control name plate.
  12.  
  13. Remove the two screws
  14.  
  15. Use a screwdriver to remove the four fitting clips and pull out the panel.
  16.  

Tape the end of the screwdriver before you use it to pry out the panel.

  1. Detach the connector.
  2.  

To install:

  1. Attach the connector.
  2.  
  3. Install the heater control name plate.
  4.  
  5. Push in the heater control knobs.
  6.  
  7. Install the center cluster finish panel.
  8.  
  9. Install the second lower finish panel.
  10.  
  11. Attach the glove box door.
  12.  
  13. Install the lower finish panel
  14.

  1. Remove the instrument panel
  2.  
  3. Detach the heater control cables
  4.  
  5. Remove the two screws and pull out the heater control assembly
  6.  
  7. Detach the connector
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the connector
  2.  
  3. Install the two screws and tighten securely
  4.  
  5. Attach the control cables to the heater control unit
  6.  
  7. Install the instrument panel
  8.  

Tundra
  1. Remove the trim panel surrounding the controls.
  2.  
  3. Remove the knobs from the control levers. Often with great effort, the knobs can be pulled off.
  4.  
  5. If equipped with air conditioning, remove the A/C switch.
  6.  
  7. Use a thin, flat-bladed tool with a protected or taped edge, and carefully work the blade into the area at the bottom of the control unit and pry it out.
  8.  
  9. Gently pull the unit forward. If equipped with a clock in the housing, disconnect the clock. Disconnect the lighting harness and pull the control unit forward.

To install:

  1. Install in reverse order, making sure the electrical connections are engage before installing the unit. Install the knobs securely and install the trim panel.

Land Cruiser
FRONT

  1. Using a flat-bladed tool, remove the two claw clips, then remove the cup holder.
  2.  
  3. Remove the ashtray, if equipped.
  4.  
  5. Separate the center cluster finish panel from the heater control assembly.
  6.  
  7. Pull out the control assembly, then disconnect the harnesses.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Attach the harness to the back of the control assembly, then install into the dash.
  2.  
  3. Attach the finish panel to the control assembly.
  4.  
  5. Install the ashtray.
  6.  
  7. Install the cup holder.
  8.  

REAR

  1. Remove the rear console end panel door.
  2.  
  3. Turn the heater dial to maximum setting.
  4.  
  5. Remove the three screws, and then the heater control assembly.
  6.  
  7. Detach the connector.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the control cable
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the control cable and connector.
  2.  
  3. Attach the three screws and heater control assembly.
  4.  
  5. Turn the heater dial to maximum setting.
  6.  
  7. Install the rear console end panel door
  8.
