  1. Loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheel.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle, then remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake drum.
  6.  
  7. Check the bearing backlash and axle shaft deviation as follows:
    1. Using a dial indicator, check that the backlash in the bearing shaft direction. The maximum is 0.027 in. (0.7mm).
    2.  
    3. If the backlash exceeds the maximum, replace the bearing.
    4.  
    5. Using a dial indicator, check the deviation at the surface of the axle shaft outside the hub bolt. Maximum is 0.0039 in. (0.1mm).
    6.  
    7. If the deviation exceeds the maximum, replace the axle shaft.
    8.

  9. On models with ABS, remove the ABS speed sensor from the axle housing.
  10.  
  11. Remove the axle shaft assembly by unfastening the four nuts from the backing plate. Pull out the shaft assembly from the rear axle housing.
  12.  
  13. Remove the O-ring from the axle housing.
  14.  
  15. On ABS models, remove the bearing and retainer (differential side) and ABS speed sensor rotor.
  16.  
  17. Remove the snap ring from the axle shaft.
  18.  
  19. Remove the rear axle shaft from the backing plate. Inspect the axle shaft run-out. Shaft run-out should be 0.079 in. (2.0mm) and the flange run-out should be 0.004 in. (0.1mm).
  20.  
  21. Remove the outer seal. Using a suitable bearing removal tool, separate the bearing from the axle shaft.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Install a new bearing to the axle shaft.
  2.  
  3. Install a new outer seal onto the axle shaft.
  4.  
  5. Replace the inner side oil seal.
  6.  
  7. Apply multi-purpose grease to the oil seal lip. Press the axle shaft into the backing plate. Install a new snap ring.
  8.  
  9. On ABS models, install the ABS speed sensor rotor and bearing retainer on the differential side.
  10.  
  11. Attach a new O-ring on the axle housing.
  12.  
  13. Install the axle assembly attach the four mounting bolts to the backing plate. Tighten to 48 ft. lbs. (66 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the rear brake assembly.
  16.  
  17. On vehicles with ABS, install the sensor to the rear housing assembly; tighten to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the rear drum and wheel.
  20.  
  21. Bleed the brake system and check for leaks.
  22.  
  23. Lower the vehicle and test drive.

Land Cruiser
  1. Loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheel. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.

  1. Remove the six nuts and plate washers. Using a brass bar and hammer, strike the center part of the axle shaft to remove the cone washers.

  1. Install two bolts into the axle holes. Gradually tighten the bolts evenly, and then pull the axle shaft. Remove the bolts from the shaft. Remove the shaft and discard the gasket.

  1. Remove the brake caliper and rotor.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the ABS speed sensor.
  4.  
  5. Remove the two mounting screws from the rear axle bearing locknut. Remove the locknut, a SST 0950925011 or an equivalent socket may be used.
  6.  
  7. Pull out the rear axle hub, locknut plate and outer bearing. Remove the axle hub.
  8.  
  9. Once the hub is removed, with a seal puller; remove the oil seal and inner bearing from the unit.
  10.  
  11. Using a brass bar and hammer, tap out the outer bearing races.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Using a special tool and a press, install the new outer races.
  2.  
  3. Pack multi-purpose grease into the bearing until it oozes out from the other side.
  4.  
  5. Coat the inside of the hub with grease.
  6.  
  7. Install the inner bearing and oil seal as follows:
    1. Place the inner bearing into the hub.
    2.  
    3. Tap the seal into place with the seal installer.
    4.  
    5. Apply multi-purpose grease to the oil seal lip.
    6.  

  8.  
  9. Clean the hub installation position of the axle housing and apply clean lubricant (thinly).
  10.  
  11. Place the hub into position Be careful not to damage the axle seal.
  12.  
  13. Install the outer bearing.
  14.  
  15. Place the locknut plate on the axle housing, making sure the tongue lines up with the key groove. Temporarily install the locknut.
  16.  
  17. Install the rotor to the hub.
  18.  
  19. Adjust the preload as follows:
    1. Use a torque wrench tighten the bearing locknut to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Make the bearing snug by turning the hub several times. Retighten the locknut to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Using the torque wrench, loosen the nut until it can be turned by hand. Using a spring tension gauge, check that the preload, then tighten the nut until the preload is 613 lbs. (2657 N).
    6.  
    7. Align the mark on the bearing locknut and tip of the axle housing under the above preload range.
    8.  
    9. Check the distance between the top surface of the axle housing and the locknut. It should be 0.00790.0354 in. (0.20.9mm) below the surface of the axle housing. If the distance is greater than specified, reassemble the locknut plate.
    10.  
    11. Check that the hub with the rotor rotates smoothly and the hub has no axial play.
    12.

  21. Install the bearing locknut screw; tighten to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Attach the ABS speed sensor, tighten to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the caliper, rear axle shaft and wheel.
  26.  
  27. Tighten the lug nuts on steel wheels to 109 ft. lbs. (147 Nm) and on aluminum wheels to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
