FLUID RECOMMENDATIONS

All vehicles use Dexron®II or III type automatic transmission fluid in the power steering system.

LEVEL CHECK

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

Check the power steering fluid level every 6 months or 6000 miles (9600 km).

  1. Make sure that the vehicle is level. If the reservoir is dirty, wipe it off.
  2.
  3. Start the engine and allow it to idle.
  4.

  1. With the engine at idle, move the steering wheel from LOCK to LOCK several times to raise the temperature of the fluid.
  2.
  3. The power steering pump reservoir is translucent, so the fluid level may be checked without removing the cap. Look through the reservoir and check for foaming or emulsification.
  4.

Foaming or emulsification indicates the either there is air in the system or the fluid level is low.

  1. Check the fluid level in the reservoir. The fluid should be within the HOT LEVEL of the reservoir. If the fluid is checked when cold, the level should be within the COLD LEVEL of the reservoir.
  2.
  3. Add fluid as required until the proper level is reached. To add fluid, remove the filler cap by turning it counterclockwise and lifting up. After the proper amount of fluid is added, replace the cap making sure that the arrows on the cap are properly aligned with the arrows on the tank.

  1. This is also a good time to check the steering box case, vane pump and hose connections for leaks and damage. Simple preventative maintenance checks like these can identify minor problems before turn into major problems and also increase your familiarity with the locations of steering system components.
