  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the rear of the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear wheels.
  6.  
  7. Put match marks on the rear brake drum and the axle hub.
  8.  
  9. Release the parking brake and remove the brake drum.
  10.  
  11. If the brake drum cannot be removed easily, do the following steps.


    1. Remove the plug and insert a screwdriver through the hole in the backing plate.
    2.  
    3. Using another screwdriver, reduce the brake shoe adjuster by turning the adjusting wheel.

To install:

  1. Aligning the match marks, install the brake drum.
  2.  
  3. Adjust the drum brake shoe clearance as follows:


    1. Temporarily install 2 hub nuts.
    2.  
    3. Remove the hole plug, and turn the adjuster to expand the shoe until the drum locks up.
    4.  
    5. Rotate the adjuster back by 8 notches.
    6.  
    7. Install the hole plug.
    8.  
    9. Remove the 2 hub nuts.

  5. Install the wheel. Torque the wheel lugs to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Check brake fluid level in the reservoir and add to proper level with clean brake fluid, if necessary.
