The switch can be accessed from under the vehicle; it is located on the bottom of the radiator.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. With the engine temperature below 181°F (83°C), turn the ignition switch ON . The cooling fan should not turn on. If it does, the coolant temperature switch is faulty or the wiring is open between the cooling fan relay and the coolant temperature switch.
  4.  
  5. Keep clear of the cooling fan blades, and unplug the coolant temperature switch. The fan should turn on. If not, the cooling fan or relay is faulty or the wiring has a short between the coolant temperature switch and the relay.

  7. Reconnect the switch, then start the engine and allow temperature to rise above 199°F (93°C). The cooling fan should turn on. If all other tests passed, but the cooling fan does not turn on now, replace the coolant temperature switch.

  1. Drain engine coolant.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the sensor connector.
  4.  
  5. Using a 19 mm deep socket wrench, remove the sensor and gasket.
  6.  
  7. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between terminals. Refer to the illustration.

  9. If the resistance is not as specified, replace the sensor.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install a new gasket to the sensor.
  2.  
  3. Using a 19 mm deep socket wrench, install the sensor. Tighten the sensor to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the sensor connector.
  6.  
  7. Refill with engine coolant.
  8.

  1. Measure the resistance between the terminals.
  2.  
  3. If the result is not as specified, replace the ECT.

  1. Drain engine coolant.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the ECT sensor connector.
  4.  
  5. Using a 19 mm deep socket wrench, remove the ECT sensor and gasket.
  6.  
  7. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between terminals 1 and 2.
  8.  
  9. If the resistance is not as specified, replace the ECT sensor.

To install:

  1. Install a new gasket to the ECT sensor.
  2.  
  3. Using a 19 mm deep socket, install the ECT sensor. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the ECT sensor connector.
  6.  
  7. Refill with engine coolant.
  8.
