Testing

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Unplug the connector from the ignition coil.
  4.
  5. Turn the ignition ON . Using a digital multimeter, measure the voltage between each terminal of the connector and ground. One of the terminals should report 12 volts. If not, the wiring is faulty.
  6.
  7. Turn the ignition OFF . Label, then unplug the spark plug wires from the ignition coils. Using a digital ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the two terminals. The resistance should be 9.7-16.7 kohms when cold. It should be 12.4-19.6 kohms when hot (operating temperature).

  6.
  7. Remove the spark plugs, then install each spark plug each ignition coil and reattach the coil connectors.
  8.
  9. Unplug the fuel injector connectors.
  10.
  11. Lay each spark plug against the valve cover. Have an assistant crank the engine and check for spark at each of the plug. Do not crank the engine for more than 5 seconds at a time.
  12.
  13. If one of the spark plugs did not fire, swap it with one of the other coils and run the spark test again. If the no spark symptom follows the coil, the coil is faulty. if it does not, the spark plug or wiring to the coil is faulty.
