Removal & Installation



2.4L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.

  5. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right engine under-cover.
  8.  
  9. Drain the coolant.
  10.  
  11. Drain the oil.
  12.  
  13. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove the drive belt.
  16.  
  17. Remove the alternator.
  18.  
  19. Remove the power steering pump.
  20.  
  21. Remove the ignition coils.
  22.  
  23. Remove the spark plugs.
  24.  
  25. Remove the injectors.
  26.  
  27. Remove the exhaust manifold.
  28.  
  29. Remove the oil filler cap.
  30.  
  31. Remove the PCV hoses and valve.
  32.  
  33. Remove the intake manifold.
  34.  
  35. Remove all wires and harnesses connected to the head.
  36.  
  37. Remove the timing chain.
  38.  
  39. Remove the camshaft sprocket.
  40.  
  41. Remove the VVT sprocket.
  42.  
  43. Remove the camshaft timing oil control valve.
  44.  
  45. Loosen the camshaft bearing cap bolts evenly, in several passes, in the sequence shown, and remove them.
  46.  
  47. Mark and remove the bearing caps. Make sure they are identified for installation.
  48.  
  49. Remove the camshafts.

To install:

  1. Coat the camshafts and bearings with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install the camshafts with the No.1 cam lobes facing as shown.
  4.  
  5. Coat the threads and heads of the bearing cap bolts with clean engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Torque the bolts evenly, in several passes, in the sequence shown, to 22 ft. lbs. (29.5 Nm) for Nos. 1 and 2; 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm) for all the others.
  8.  
  9. Check and adjust the valve clearance.
  10.  
  11. Install the camshaft and VVT sprockets.
  12.  
  13. Install the timing chain.
  14.  
  15. Install the camshaft position sensor.
  16.  
  17. Install the oil control valve.
  18.  
  19. Install the oil filler cap.
  20.  
  21. Install the intake manifold.
  22.  
  23. Install the PCV valve and hoses.
  24.  
  25. Install the engine wiring.
  26.  
  27. Install the exhaust manifold.
  28.  
  29. Install the injectors.
  30.  
  31. Install the spark plugs.
  32.  
  33. Install the ignition coils.
  34.  
  35. Install the power steering pump.
  36.  
  37. Install the alternator.
  38.  
  39. Install the drive belt.
  40.  
  41. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  42.  
  43. Refill all fluids.
  44.  
  45. Install the under-cover.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    NOTE
    Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the negative battery cable before starting any repair work to prevent air bag and seat belt pretensioner activation.

  7. Remove the right engine undercover.
  8.  
  9. Drain the coolant.
  10.  
  11. Drain the oil.
  12.  
  13. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove the drive belt.
  16.  
  17. Remove the alternator.
  18.  
  19. Remove the power steering pump.
  20.  
  21. Remove the ignition coils.
  22.  
  23. Remove the spark plugs.
  24.  
  25. Remove the injectors.
  26.  
  27. Remove the exhaust manifold.
  28.  
  29. Remove the oil filler cap.
  30.  
  31. Remove the PCV hoses and valve.
  32.  
  33. Remove the intake manifold.
  34.  
  35. Remove all wires and harnesses connected to the head.
  36.  
  37. Remove the timing chain.
  38.  
  39. Remove the camshaft sprocket.
  40.  
  41. Remove the VVT sprocket.
  42.  
  43. Remove the camshaft timing oil control valve.

  45. Remove the camshafts.
  46.  

To install:

  1. Coat the camshafts and bearings with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install the camshafts with the No.1 cam lobes facing as shown.
