Front Crankshaft Seal

Removal & Installation



For front crankshaft seal on the 2.4L engine, see, -Timing Chain, Cover and Seal-.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
    NOTE
    The front oil seal can be removed from the engine without removing the oil pump.

  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
    Be sure not to damage any part of the crankshaft.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Timing belt covers and the timing belt
     
    Front crankshaft gear from the crankshaft, using Crankshaft Gear Puller tool 09950-50010
     



    Cut off the oil seal lip
     
    Oil seal, using a suitable tool. Wrap the edge of the tool with a rag or tape to prevent damaging the crankshaft.
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New seal, by applying a thin layer of liquid sealer to the outside of the seal
     
    Apply multi purpose grease to the new oil seal lip
     
    New oil seal, by tapping it in until its surface is flush with the oil pump body edge, using the Oil Seal Installer tool 09226-00010 and a hammer
     
    Timing belt and timing belt covers
     
    All other components
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  4.  


NOTE

2.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  


NOTE
The front oil seal can be removed from the engine without removing the oil pump.

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Timing belt covers and the timing belt
     
    Front crankshaft gear from the crankshaft, using Crankshaft Gear Puller tool 09950-50010

WARNING
Be sure not to damage any part of the crankshaft.



Cut off the oil seal lip
 
Oil seal, using a suitable tool. Wrap the edge of the tool with a rag or tape to prevent damaging the crankshaft.
 

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New seal, by applying a thin layer of liquid sealer to the outside of the seal
     
    Apply multi purpose grease to the new oil seal lip
     
    New oil seal, by tapping it in until its surface is flush with the oil pump body edge, using the Oil Seal Installer tool 09226-00010 and a hammer
     
    Timing belt and timing belt covers
     
    All other components
     
    Negative battery cable

  3. Start the engine and check for leaks.

    Apply multi purpose grease to the new oil seal lip
     
    New oil seal, by tapping it in until its surface is flush with the oil pump body edge, using the Oil Seal Installer tool 09226-00010 and a hammer
     
    Timing belt and timing belt covers
     
    All other components
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Start the engine and check for leaks.
