Rear Main Seal

Removal & Installation



If the rear oil seal retainer is not installed to the block, use a tapered ended screwdriver and hammer to remove the oil seal. Apply multi-purpose grease to the new oil seal lip. Using a seal driver, tap the seal into place. Be careful not to install it slantwise.

If the rear oil seal retainer is installed on the cylinder block, using a knife, cut off the lip of the seal. Using a taped ended prytool, pry the old seal out of the retainer. Inspect the oil seal lip contacting surface of the crankshaft for cracks or damage. Apply multipurpose grease to the new oil seal, then tap the seal in place with a seal installer. Be careful not to install the seal slantwise.

2.7L & 3.4L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the transmission and flywheel from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Cut off the rubber lip portion of the seal with a sharp knife.
  6.  
  7. Pry out the oil seal.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the rear main seal so that it is flush with the seal retainer housing.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Flywheel/driveplate. Tighten the bolts to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm) for engines with a manual transmission, 61 ft. lbs. (83 Nm) for engines with an automatic.
