Steering Knuckle

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front wheels
     
    For 2000-2003, the cotter pin and lockcap from the halfshaft end. For 2004-2005, unstake the nut.
     
    Halfshaft locknut, by applying the front brakes
     
    Brake caliper and support it on a wire

  5. Matchmark the rotor to the hub.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Secure the halfshaft aside using a wire. Be careful not to damage the shaft boot or ABS sensor rotor.



    Rotor
     
    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor from the steering knuckle, if equipped
     
    Loosen the strut-s lower end nuts
     
    Tie rod end from the steering knuckle
     
    Lower control arm from the ball joint, by removing the bolt and 2 nuts
     
    Halfshaft from the axle hub
     



    Both strut-s lower end nuts
     
    Steering knuckle
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Knuckle to the lower strut and install the bolts
     
    Lower ball joint to the lower arm. Tighten the bolts to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm).
     
    Tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Tighten the nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
     
    Halfshaft to the hub and knuckle
     
    Tighten the lower strut nuts to 117 ft. lbs. (158 Nm) for 2000-2003; 105 ft. lbs. (143 Nm) for 2004-2005.
     
    ABS speed sensor. Tighten the bolt to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Rotor to the hub, by aligning the matchmark
     
    Brake caliper. Tighten the mounting bolts to 79 ft. lbs. (107 Nm).
     
    Axle locknut, using an assistant to apply the brakes. Tighten the nut to 159 ft. lbs. (216 Nm).
     
    For 2000-2003, the lockcap and a new cotter pin. For 2004-2005, stake the nut.
     
    Wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Turn the wheel by hand, verify that the wheel turns without noise and without binding.
  4.  
  5. Check the signal from the ABS sensor.
