Strut (MacPherson Strut) Assembly

Overhaul (Coil Spring Removal & Installation)



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     

  4.  


NOTE
If equipped, be careful not to damage the oil seal, driveshaft boot and/or speed sensor rotor when removing the steering knuckle.



Shock absorber (strut assembly)
 

  1. Install a nut/bolt to the bracket at the lower portion of the strut assembly and secure it in a vise.
  2.  
  3. Compress the coil spring with a spring compressor.
  4.  


CAUTION
The proper tools must be used for this procedure. The spring on the strut is under high pressure and can cause serious injury if not properly removed and installed.

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Center retaining nut, by holding the spring seat
     
    Support, dust seal, spring seat, insulator and spring from the strut assembly
     

  2.  

To install:

  1. Install the spring bumper and lower insulator to the strut assembly.
  2.  
  3. Compress the coil spring and fit the lower end of the spring into the spring seat gap.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Upper insulator, spring seat, dust seal, support and spring seat. Tighten the new retaining nut to 34 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).

    Wheel
     

  6.  
  7. If required, bleed the brake system and check for leaks.
  8.  
  9. Check and/or adjust the front wheel alignment.
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE

  4.  
  5. Install a nut/bolt to the bracket at the lower portion of the strut assembly and secure it in a vise.

  5. Install or connect the following:

    Upper insulator, spring seat, dust seal, support and spring seat. Tighten the new retaining nut to 34 ft. lbs. (47 Nm) for the RAV4 and RX300; 36 ft. lbs. (49Nm) for the Highlander; 18 ft. lbs. (25Nm) for the 4Runner.

  6.  
  7. If required, bleed the brake system and check for leaks.
  8.  
  9. Check and/or adjust the front wheel alignment.
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Remove the strut from the vehicle.
  4.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Wheel
     

  4.  


NOTE
Do not support the weight of the vehicle on the suspension arm.



Brake hose from the strut
 
Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) electrical connection to the strut bolt, if equipped
 


NOTE
It is not necessary to disconnect the brake hose from the brake caliper.



Strut from the steering knuckle
 
Suspension support bracket from the top of the strut tower
 
Strut
 

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Suspension support bracket to the top of the strut tower
     
    Strut to the strut tower. Tighten the 3 nuts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
     
    Steering knuckle to the strut lower bracket. Tighten the nuts to 117 ft. lbs. (158 Nm).
     
    ABS electrical connector to the strut. Tighten the bolt to 48 inch lbs. (5.4 Nm).
     
    Brake line to the strut. Tighten the bolt to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
     

  2.  
  3. If the brake lines were opened, add brake fluid and bleed the brake system.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Check and/or adjust the front wheel alignment.

  1. Remove the wheel.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the stabilizer bar link from the strut.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake hose and wire harness from the strut.
  6.  
  7. Loosen, don-t remove, the 2 lower strut nuts
  8.  
  9. Remove the 3 upper end nuts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 2 lower bolts and nuts.
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

    Upper end nuts: 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm)
     
    Lower end bolts/nuts: 105 ft. lbs. (143 Nm)
     
    Stabilizer bar links: 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)

RAV4 is equipped with front strut and rear shock absorber type suspension arrangement.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Do not support the weight of the vehicle on the suspension arm.


    NOTE
    It is not necessary to disconnect the brake hose from the brake caliper.



    Negative battery cable

    Brake hose from the strut

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Suspension support bracket to the top of the strut tower
     
    Strut to the strut tower. Tighten the 3 nuts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
     
    Steering knuckle to the strut lower bracket. Tighten the nuts to 117 ft. lbs. (158 Nm).
     
    ABS electrical connector to the strut. Tighten the bolt to 48 inch lbs. (5.4 Nm).
     
    Brake line to the strut. Tighten the bolt to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
     

  2.  
  3. If the brake lines were opened, add brake fluid and bleed the brake system.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Check and/or adjust the front wheel alignment.

  4.

    Strut to the strut tower. Tighten the 3 nuts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
     
    Steering knuckle to the strut lower bracket. Tighten the nuts to 117 ft. lbs. (158 Nm).
     
    ABS electrical connector to the strut. Tighten the bolt to 48 inch lbs. (5.4 Nm).
     
    Brake line to the strut. Tighten the bolt to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).

  3. If the brake lines were opened, add brake fluid and bleed the brake system.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Wheel

  6.  
  7. Check and/or adjust the front wheel alignment.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the stabilizer bar link from the strut.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake hose and wire harness from the strut.
  10.  
  11. Loosen, don-t remove, the 2 lower strut nuts
  12.  
  13. Remove the 3 upper end nuts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the 2 lower bolts and nuts.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

    Upper end nuts: 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm)
     
    Lower end bolts/nuts: 105 ft. lbs. (143 Nm)
     
    Stabilizer bar links: 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)
