Adjustment



Check the bearing play in the axial direction and also check the axle hub deviation. The maximum play for both checks should be 0.0020 in. (0.05mm). If greater than the specified maximum, replace the bearing. The wheel bearing is not adjustable.

Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front wheels
     
    For 2001-03, the cotter pin and lockcap from the halfshaft end. For 2004, unstake the nut.
     
    Halfshaft locknut, by applying the front brakes
     
    Brake caliper and support it on a wire
     

  4.  
  5. Matchmark the rotor to the hub.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rotor
     
    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor from the steering knuckle, if equipped
     
    Loosen the strut-s lower end nuts
     
    Tie rod end from the steering knuckle
     
    Lower control arm from the ball joint, by removing the bolt and 2 nuts
     
    Halfshaft from the axle hub
     

  8.  


NOTE
Secure the halfshaft aside using a wire. Be careful not to damage the shaft boot or ABS sensor rotor.



Both strut-s lower end nuts
 
Steering knuckle
 

  1. Clamp the steering knuckle in a vise with soft jaws to protect the knuckle.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Dust deflector, by prying it from the hub
     
    Ball joint from the steering knuckle
     
    Hub from the knuckle, using slide hammer
     
    Inner race from the hub, using press and arbor tool
     
    4 bolts and the dust cover
     
    Inner oil seal, using Seal Removal tool 09308-00010
     
    Outer oil seal, using Seal Removal tool 09308-00010
     
    Snapring
     

  4.  
  5. Install inner race (removed from the hub) on the outside of the bearing
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering knuckle bearing, using a bearing driver
  8.  

To install:

  1. Clean bearing seating surfaces with a clean, dry rag.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Bearing into the knuckle, using a press and Bearing Installer tool 09608-32010
     
    Snapring
     
    Dust cover. Tighten the 4 bolts to 74 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    New outer oil seal, using a seal driver

NOTE
Apply multi-purpose grease to the oil seal lip.



Hub into the steering knuckle
 
New inner oil seal, using a seal driver
 


NOTE
Apply multi-purpose grease to the oil seal lip.



Lower ball joint to the steering knuckle. Tighten the nut to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm).
 
New cotter pin
 
Dust deflector, by aligning it with the ABS speed sensor hole
 
Knuckle to the lower strut and install the bolts
 
Lower ball joint to the lower arm. Tighten the bolts to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm).
 
Tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Tighten the nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
 
Halfshaft to the hub and knuckle
 
Tighten the lower strut nuts to 117 ft. lbs. (158 Nm) for 2001-03; 105 ft. lbs. (143 Nm) for 2004.
 
ABS speed sensor. Tighten the bolt to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
 
Rotor to the hub, by aligning the matchmark
 
Brake caliper. Tighten the mounting bolts to 79 ft. lbs. (107 Nm).
 
Axle locknut, using an assistant to apply the brakes. Tighten the nut to 159 ft. lbs. (216 Nm).
 
For 2001-03, the lockcap and a new cotter pin. For 2004, stake the nut.
 
Wheel
 
Negative battery cable
 

  1. Turn the wheel by hand, verify that the wheel turns without noise and without binding.
  2.  
  3. Check the signal from the ABS sensor.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front wheels
     
    Cotter pin and lockcap from the halfshaft end
     
    Halfshaft locknut, by applying the front brakes
     
    Brake caliper and support it on a wire
     

  4.  
  5. Matchmark the rotor to the hub.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE

    Snapring
     
    Dust cover. Tighten the 4 bolts to 74 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    New outer oil seal, using a seal driver
     



    Hub into the steering knuckle
     
    New inner oil seal, using a seal driver
     



    Lower ball joint to the steering knuckle. Tighten the nut to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm).
     
    New cotter pin
     
    Dust deflector, by aligning it with the ABS speed sensor hole
     
    Knuckle to the lower strut and install the bolts
     
    Lower ball joint to the lower arm. Tighten the bolts to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm).
     
    Tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Tighten the nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
     
    Halfshaft to the hub and knuckle
     
    Tighten the lower strut nuts to 117 ft. lbs. (158 Nm).
     
    ABS speed sensor. Tighten the bolt to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Rotor to the hub, by aligning the matchmark
     
    Brake caliper. Tighten the mounting bolts to 79 ft. lbs. (107 Nm).
     
    Axle locknut, using an assistant to apply the brakes. Tighten the nut to 159 ft. lbs. (216 Nm).
     
    Lockcap and a new cotter pin
     
    Wheel
     
    Negative battery cable

    New inner oil seal, using a seal driver
     



    Lower ball joint to the steering knuckle. Tighten the nut to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm).
     
    New cotter pin
     
    Dust deflector, by aligning it with the ABS speed sensor hole
     
    Steering knuckle to the lower strut and install the bolts
