Upper Control Arms

Removal & Installation




NOTE
For MacPherson struts, see Strut Overhaul in this section.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Axle shaft, if equipped with 2WD
     
    Halfshaft, if equipped with 4WD
     
    Brake drum
     
    Both brake line clamp bolts
     
    Parking brake cable clamp bolt
     
    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor and wiring harness, if equipped with ABS
     
    Rear axle hub with the brake, by removing the 4 bolts
     

  4.  
  5. Support the hub securely.
  6.  
  7. Support the control arm with a floor jack.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Shock absorber from the control arm, by removing the bolt
     

  10.  


NOTE
The control arm must be supported before removing the bolt for the shock absorber. Leave the floor jack under the control arm. Later, the floor jack will be lowered to remove the coil spring.



Cotter pins and nuts by supporting the lower and upper suspension arms
 

  1. Disconnect the upper and lower control arms from the control arm, using tool 09628-62011
  2.  
  3. Remove the coil spring and control arm, as follows:

    Matchmark the toe adjust cam and body.
     
    Coil spring and upper insulator, by loosening the bolt and lowering the control arm.
     
    Bolt, toe-adjust cam, 2 attachments, nut and control arm
     
    Bolt and spring bumper
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Spring bumper. Tighten the bolt to 108 inch lbs. (13 Nm).
     
    Control arm, 2 attachments, toe-adjust cam, bolt and nut; do not tighten the bolt at this time
     
    Spring and upper insulator
     

  2.  
  3. Raise the control arm with a floor jack.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Upper and lower suspension arms to the control arm. Tighten the nuts to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
     
    New cotter pins
     
    Sock absorber to the control arm. Tighten the bolt to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
     
    Rear axle hub with the brake. Tighten the 4 bolts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
     
    ABS speed sensor and wiring harness, if equipped. Tighten the ABS speed sensor to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm) and the wiring harness to 108 inch lbs. (13 Nm).
     
    Parking brake cable clamp. Tighten the bolt to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
     
    Both brake line cable clamps. Tighten the bracket bolt to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm) and the clamp bolt to 108 inch lbs. (13 Nm).
     
    Brake drum
     
    Rear halfshaft, if equipped with 4WD
     
    Axle shaft, if equipped with 2WD
     
    Rear wheel
     

  6.  
  7. Lower the rear of the vehicle and stabilize the suspension.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    Align the matchmarks to the toe-adjust cam. Tighten the bolt to 98 ft. lbs. (132 Nm).
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  10.  
  11. Check and/or adjust the wheel alignment
  12.

  1. Remove the wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear halfshaft.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ABS sensor wire from the lower arm and the sensor.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake drum or caliper and rotor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake line from the control arm.
  10.  
  11. Remove the parking brake cable from the control arm.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rear hub.
  14.  
  15. Support the lower arm with a jack.
  16.  
  17. Remove the shock absorber.
  18.  
  19. Remove the stabilizer bar from the lower arm.
  20.  
  21. Lower the jack to remove tension from the spring.
  22.  
  23. Remove the 2 bolts and nuts and remove the upper arm.
  24.  
  25. Matchmark the camber adjusting cam and the suspension member.
  26.  
  27. Remove the 2 bolts and nuts and remove the lower arm.
  28.  
  29. Matchmark the toe adjusting cam and body.
  30.  
  31. Loosen the bolt and remove the spring and insulator.
  32.  
  33. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

    Coil spring bolt: 98 ft. lbs. (132 Nm)
     
    Lower arm bolts: 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm)
     
    Upper arm bolts: 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm)
