Wheel Speed Sensors

Removal & Installation



Front
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheel.
  4.  
  5. Unplug the connector from the speed sensor.
  6.  
  7. Remove the fender liner screws and the liner.
  8.  
  9. Remove the speed sensor retainers and the sensor from the knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolt, hose and harness clamp from the shock absorber.
  12.  
  13. Remove the resin clip, clamp bolt and sensor.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install the speed sensor and tighten the fasteners to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Route the clamp bolt and tighten the bolt. Install the resin clip.
  4.  
  5. Route the hose, install the harness clamp and tighten the bolt to 21 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Attach the speed sensor connector and install the wheel.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the fender liner screws and the liner.
  6.  
  7. Unplug the connector from the speed sensor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the sensor harness and clamp from the body.
  10.  
  11. Remove the speed sensor retainers and the sensor from the knuckle.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the speed sensor and tighten the fasteners to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Route the hose, install the harness clamp and tighten the bolt to body to 71 in. lbs. (8 Nm) and the bolt to shock absorber to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Attach the speed sensor connector and install fender liner and the wheel.
  6.  

Rear
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheel.
  4.  
  5. Unplug the connector from the speed sensor.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake drum.
  8.  
  9. Loosen the 4 nuts and remove the rear axle hub and speed sensor assembly.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the sensor with the rear axle hub assembly. Tighten the hub assembly bolts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the sensor connector and install the wheel.
  4.  

2wd Vehicles
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheel.
  4.  
  5. Unplug the connector from the rear speed sensor.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake drum, if equipped.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake rotor, if equipped.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear wheel bearing/hub assembly.
  12.  
  13. Mount the rear wheel bearing/hub assembly in a vise.
  14.  
  15. Using a hammer and pin punch, drive out the 2 pins and remove the attachments from the tool illustrated.
  16.  
  17. Using the tool illustrated and two 12mm bolts with a pitch of 1.5mm, remove the rear speed sensor from the hub.

To install:

  1. Clean the sensor and hub mating surfaces, place the sensor on the hub as illustrated.
  2.  
  3. Using the tool illustrated and a press, install the sensor into the hub making sure it goes in straight and slow.
  4.  
  5. Install the sensor with the rear axle hub assembly.
  6.  
  7. Install the brake rotor, if equipped.
  8.  
  9. Install the brake drum, if equipped.
  10.  
  11. Connect the sensor connector and install the wheel.

4wd Vehicles
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the quarter trim panel.
  6.  
  7. Unplug the connector from the speed sensor and pull out the sensor wire with the grommet.
  8.  
  9. Remove the clamp bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolts and speed sensor assembly.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the sensor bolts to 761 in. lbs. (8 Nm).
