Transaxle Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Hood
     
    Wiper and blade assembly
     
    Top cowl seal and panel
     
    Window washer hoses, from the ventilator louvers
     
    Left and right ventilator louvers
     
    Heater air duct
     
    Battery and tray
     
    Throttle cable
     
    Cruise control actuator with its bracket, if equipped
     
    Starter
     
    Shift control cable
     
    Body-to-engine ground strap
     
    Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch, solenoid and ATF temperature connectors
     
    5 upper transaxle-to-engine mounting bolts
     
    Front wheel
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Halfshafts
     
    Front exhaust pipe
     
    Stabilizer bar
     
    Both steering gear mounting bolts and support it in the vehicle
     
    Shift control cable from its bracket
     
    Power steering pipe and the oil cooler clamps from the frame
     
    Both left-side transaxle mounting nuts
     
    Rear-side engine mounting nuts
     
    Engine shock absorber mounting bolts
     
    3 front-side engine mounting bolts
     

  4.  
  5. Attach an engine sling to the engine hangers in order to support the engine weight.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front frame mounting bolts and the frame
     
    Transaxle oil cooler lines
     

  8.  
  9. Support the transaxle with a transmission jack.

    Torque converter access cover
     
    6 torque converter mounting bolts
     
    3 lower transaxle-to-engine mounting bolts
     
    Engine from the transaxle

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transaxle
     
    3 lower transaxle-to-engine mounting bolts and tighten to the illustrated value.
     
    Torque converter-to-flexplate bolts, starting with the black bolt, then the other 5.

  3. The rest of installation is the reverse of the removal referring to the illustrations for the tightening specifications.

  1. Remove the engine/transaxle assembly. See Engine Removal and Installation-.
  2.  
  3. Remove the left and right halfshafts.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect all wiring between the engine and transaxle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the starter.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect all cables between the engine and transaxle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil filler tube.
  12.  
  13. Remove the oil cooler tubes.
  14.  
  15. Remove the engine mount bracket.
  16.  
  17. With 2wd:
    1. Remove the torque converter cover.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 6 torque converter bolts.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 8 engine-to-transaxle bolts and separate the units.
    6.

  19. With 4wd:
    1. Remove the 5 bolts and 1 nut and remove the transfer case stiffener plate.
    2.  
    3. Remove the torque converter cover.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 6 torque converter bolts.
    6.  
    7. Remove the 8 engine-to-transaxle bolts and separate the units.
    8.  
    9. Remove the 2 bolts and 6 nuts. Using a plastic hammer, drive the transfer case from the transaxle.

  21. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

    See the illustration: bolt A 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm); bolt B 34 ft. lbs. (46 Nm); bolt C 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm)

    Transfer case bolts and nuts: 51 ft. lbs. (69 Nm). Use a new gasket.
     
    Torque converter bolts (green bolt first): 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm)
     
    Stiffener plate: 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm)
     
    Engine mount bracket: 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)
