3.3L Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right hand front wheel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the wiper arms.
  12.  
  13. Remove the cowl panel.
  14.  
  15. Remove the wiper link assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove the cowl top to inner brace.
  18.  
  19. Remove the cowl top cover outer sub assembly.
  20.  
  21. Remove the radiator inlet hose.
  22.  
  23. Remove the ignition coil.
  24.  
  25. Remove the cylinder head cover.
  26.  
  27. Remove the apron seal.
  28.  
  29. Remove the A/C compressor to crankshaft pulley belt.
  30.  
  31. Remove the vane pump belt.
  32.  
  33. Remove the engine moving control rod bolts and rod.
  34.  
  35. Remove the number 2 engine mounting stay.
  36.  
  37. Remove the number 2 alternator bracket and the alternator belt adjusting bar.
  38.  
  39. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  40.  
  41. Remove the timing belt covers 1 and 2. Refer to the timing belt removal and installation procedure in this manual.
  42.  
  43. Remove the right hand engine mount bracket.
  44.  
  45. Remove the timing belt guide number 2. Refer to the timing belt removal and installation procedure in this manual.
  46.  
  47. Remove the timing belt.
  48.  
  49. Remove the timing belt guide number 2 idler sub assembly. Refer to the timing belt removal and installation procedure in this manual.
  50.  
  51. Remove the camshaft pulley and lower timing cover. Refer to the timing belt removal and installation procedure in this manual.
  52.  
  53. Remove the timing belt number 3 cover. Refer to the timing belt removal and installation procedure in this manual.
  54.  
  55. Align the timing marks of the camshaft drive and driven gears by using a wrench to turn the camshaft.

  57. Attach the exhaust camshaft sub gear to the main gear with a 16-20mm long x 6mm thread diameter bolt and tighten to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
    NOTE
    When removing the camshaft, be sure the torsional spring force of the sub gear has been taken up by the service bolt.

  59. Mark the bearing caps prior to removal so they can be installed in their original positions.
  60.  
  61. Loosen the number 3 camshaft cap bolts in sequence using several steps.
  62.  
  63. Loosen the number 4 camshaft cap bolts in sequence using several steps.

To install:


WARNING
The camshaft has a small thrust clearance, make sure to keep the camshaft level during installation to avoid damage to the camshaft and cylinder head.

  1. Apply clean engine oil to the camshaft thrust and journal locations.
  2.  
  3. Place the number 4 camshaft at a 90 degree angle of timing on the cylinder head as illustrated.

  5. Apply a multi purpose grease to a new oil seal lip and install the seal. Make sure to not turn the seal lip over and insert the seal until it stops. Remove any packing material from the seal surface.
  6.  
  7. Apply seal packing to the number 1 bearing cap as illustrated. Install the cap within 5 minutes of applying the packing. Do not let the seal come into contact with engine oil until at least two hours after it has been installed.
  8.  
  9. Install the number 4 camshaft bearing caps in their original locations, apply a light coat of oil to the cap bolt thread and using several passes; tighten the bolts to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm) in the sequence shown.
  10.  
  11. Align the timing marks on the number 3 camshaft as shown.
  12.  
  13. Install the number 3 camshaft bearing caps in their original locations, apply a light coat of oil to the cap bolt thread and using several passes; tighten the bolts to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm) in the sequence shown.
  14.  
  15. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of removal.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.

  13. Remove the cowl panel.
  14.  
  15. Remove the wiper link assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove the cowl top to inner brace.
  18.  
  19. Remove the cowl top cover outer sub assembly.
  20.  
  21. Remove the radiator inlet hose.
  22.  
  23. Remove the ignition coil.
  24.  
  25. Remove the cylinder head cover.
  26.  
  27. Remove the apron seal.
  28.  
  29. Remove the A/C compressor to crankshaft pulley belt.
  30.  
  31. Remove the vane pump belt.
  32.  
  33. Remove the engine moving control rod bolts and rod.
  34.  
  35. Remove the number 2 engine mounting stay.
  36.  
  37. Remove the number 2 alternator bracket and the alternator belt adjusting bar.
  38.  
  39. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  40.  
  41. Remove the timing belt covers 1 and 2. Refer to the timing belt removal and installation procedure in this manual.
  42.  
  43. Remove the right hand engine mount bracket.
  44.  
  45. Remove the timing belt guide number 2. Refer to the timing belt removal and installation procedure in this manual.
  46.  
  47. Remove the timing belt.
  48.  
  49. Remove the timing belt guide number 2 idler sub assembly. Refer to the timing belt removal and installation procedure in this manual.
  50.  
  51. Remove the camshaft pulley and lower timing cover. Refer to the timing belt removal and installation procedure in this manual.
  52.  
  53. Remove the timing belt number 3 cover. Refer to the timing belt removal and installation procedure in this manual.

  55. Align the timing marks of the camshaft drive and driven gears by using a wrench to turn the camshaft.

  57. Attach the exhaust camshaft sub gear to the main gear with a 16-20mm long x 6mm thread diameter bolt and tighten to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
    NOTE
    When removing the camshaft, be sure the torsional spring force of the sub gear has been taken up by the service bolt.

  59. Mark the bearing caps prior to removal so they can be installed in their original positions.
  60.  
  61. Loosen the number 1 camshaft cap bolts in sequence using several steps.
  62.  
  63. Loosen the number 2 camshaft cap bolts in sequence using several steps.

To install:


WARNING
The camshaft has a small thrust clearance, make sure to keep the camshaft level during installation to avoid damage to the camshaft and cylinder head.

  1. Apply clean engine oil to the camshaft thrust and journal locations.
  2.  
  3. Place the number 2 camshaft at a 90 degree angle of timing on the cylinder head as illustrated.
  4.  
  5. Apply a multi purpose grease to a new oil seal lip and install the seal. Make sure to not turn the seal lip over and insert the seal until it stops. Remove any packing material from the seal surface.
  6.  
  7. Apply seal packing to the number 1 bearing cap as illustrated. Install the cap within 5 minutes of applying the packing. Do not let the seal come into contact with engine oil until at least two hours after it has been installed.

  9. Install the number 2 camshaft bearing caps in their original locations, apply a light coat of oil to the cap bolt thread and using several passes; tighten the bolts to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm) in the sequence shown.
  10.  
  11. Align the timing marks on the number 1 camshaft as shown.
  12.  
  13. Install the number 1 camshaft bearing caps in their original locations, apply a light coat of oil to the cap bolt thread and using several passes; tighten the bolts to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm) in the sequence shown.
  14.  
  15. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of removal.
