Oil Pan

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Right front wheel
     
    Fender apron seal
     
    Engine undercover
     

  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil from the engine.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front exhaust pipe
     
    Front exhaust pipe bracket from the No. 1 oil pan
     
    Flywheel housing undercover
     
    10 bolts and 2 nuts to the No. 2 oil pan
     

  8.  
  9. Insert the blade of the Oil Pan Seal Cutting tool 09032-00100 between the No. 1 and No. 2 oil pans. Clean the surfaces of the oil pans.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    3 oil strainer nuts and gasket
     

  12.  
  13. Remove the No. 1 oil pan, as follows:
    NOTE
    Make a note of the position of the each bolt. When replacing the bolts into the oil pan, place each bolt in the position from which it was removed.


    NOTE
    Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces.



    2 bolts and the flywheel housing undercover
     
    17 bolts and 2 nuts to the No. 1 oil pan
     



    Oil pan, by prying the portions between the cylinder block and the oil pan

  14.  

To install:

  1. Clean all mating surfaces of the oil pans.
  2.  
  3. Install the baffle plate to the No. 1 oil pan and tighten to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the No. 1 oil pan, as follows:
    1. Using a non residue solvent, clean both sealing surfaces to the oil pan.
    2.  
    3. Apply liquid sealant to the oil pan and engine block.
    4.  
    5. Install the oil pan with the 17 bolts and 2 nuts. Uniformly tighten the bolts and nuts in several passes.
    6.  
    7. Tighten the No. 1 oil pan bolts, as follows:

      10mm head bolt: 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm)
       
      12mm head bolt: 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
       
      14mm head bolt: 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm)
       

    8.  
    9. Install the flywheel housing undercover with the 2 bolts. Tighten the bolts to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
    10.  

  6.  
  7. Install the oil strainer with the 3 nuts. Tighten the nuts to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the No. 2 oil pan, as follows:
    1. Using a non residue solvent, clean both sealing surfaces to the oil pan.
    2.  
    3. Apply liquid sealant to the oil pan and engine block.
    4.  
    5. Install the No. 2 oil pan with the 10 bolts and 2 nuts. Uniformly tighten the bolts and nuts in several passes. Tighten the bolts to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
    6.  

  10.  
  11. Install or connect the following:

    Flywheel housing undercover
     
    Front exhaust pipe bracket to the No. 1 oil pan. Tighten the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
     

  12.  
  13. Install the front exhaust pipe, as follows:

    Temporarily install the 3 new gaskets and the front exhaust pipe with the 2 bolts and 6 nuts
     
    Tighten the 4 exhaust manifolds-to-front exhaust pipe nuts to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm).
     
    Tighten the both front exhaust pipe-to-center exhaust pipe nuts/bolts to 41 ft. lbs. (56 Nm).
     
    Bracket. Tighten both bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
     
    Support stay. Tighten both bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
     

  14.  
  15. Install or connect the following:

    Engine undercover
     
    Right fender apron seal
     
    Right front wheel
     

  16.  
  17. Fill the engine with oil.
  18.  
  19. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  20.  

3.0L & 3.3L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Right front wheel
     
    Fender apron seal
     
    Engine undercover
     

  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil from the engine.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front exhaust pipe
     
    Front exhaust pipe bracket from the No. 1 oil pan
     
    Flywheel housing undercover
     
    10 bolts and 2 nuts to the No. 2 oil pan
     

  8.  
  9. Insert the blade of the Oil Pan Seal Cutting tool 09032-00100 between the No. 1 and No. 2 oil pans. Clean the surfaces of the oil pans.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    3 oil strainer nuts and gasket
     

  12.  
  13. Remove the No. 1 oil pan, as follows:

    2 bolts and the flywheel housing undercover
     
    17 bolts and 2 nuts to the No. 1 oil pan

NOTE
Make a note of the position of the each bolt. When replacing the bolts into the oil pan, place each bolt in the position from which it was removed.

NOTE

Baffle plate from the No. 1 oil pan
 

To install:

  1. Clean all mating surfaces of the oil pans.
  2.  
  3. Install the baffle plate to the No. 1 oil pan and tighten to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the No. 1 oil pan, as follows:
    1. Using a non residue solvent, clean both sealing surfaces to the oil pan.
    2.  
    3. Apply liquid sealant to the oil pan and engine block.
    4.  
    5. Install the oil pan with the 17 bolts and 2 nuts. Uniformly tighten the bolts and nuts in several passes.
    6.  
    7. Tighten the No. 1 oil pan bolts, as follows:
    8.  



    10mm head bolt: 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm)
     
    12mm head bolt: 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
     
    14mm head bolt: 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm)
     
    Install the flywheel housing undercover with the 2 bolts. Tighten the bolts to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     

  6.  
  7. Install the oil strainer with the 3 nuts. Tighten the nuts to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the No. 2 oil pan, as follows:
    1. Using a non residue solvent, clean both sealing surfaces to the oil pan.
    2.  
    3. Apply liquid sealant to the oil pan and engine block.
    4.  
    5. Install the No. 2 oil pan with the 10 bolts and 2 nuts. Uniformly tighten the bolts and nuts in several passes. Tighten the bolts to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
    6.  

  10.  
  11. Install or connect the following:
    1. Flywheel housing undercover
    2.  
    3. Front exhaust pipe bracket to the No. 1 oil pan. Tighten the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
    4.  

  12.  
  13. Install the front exhaust pipe, as follows:

    Temporarily install the 3 new gaskets and the front exhaust pipe with the 2 bolts and 6 nuts
     
    Tighten the 4 exhaust manifolds-to-front exhaust pipe nuts to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm).
     
    Tighten the both front exhaust pipe-to-center exhaust pipe nuts/bolts to 41 ft. lbs. (56 Nm).
     
    Bracket. Tighten both bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
     
    Support stay. Tighten both bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
     

  14.  
  15. Install or connect the following:

    Engine undercover
     
    Right fender apron seal
     
    Right front wheel
     

  16.  
  17. Fill the engine with oil.
  18.  
  19. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  20.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Right front wheel
     
    Fender apron seal
     
    Engine undercover
     

  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil from the engine.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front exhaust pipe
     
    Front exhaust pipe bracket from the No. 1 oil pan
     
    Flywheel housing undercover
     
    10 bolts and 2 nuts to the No. 2 oil pan
     

  8.  
  9. Insert the blade of the Oil Pan Seal Cutting tool 09032-00100 between the No. 1 and No. 2 oil pans. Clean the surfaces of the oil pans.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    3 oil strainer nuts and gasket
     

  12.  
  13. Remove the No. 1 oil pan, as follows:
    NOTE
    Make a note of the position of the each bolt. When replacing the bolts into the oil pan, place each bolt in the position from which it was removed.


    NOTE
    Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces.

    17 bolts and 2 nuts to the No. 1 oil pan

To install:

  1. Clean all mating surfaces of the oil pans.
  2.  
  3. Install the baffle plate to the No. 1 oil pan and tighten to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the No. 1 oil pan, as follows:
    1. Using a non residue solvent, clean both sealing surfaces to the oil pan.
    2.  
    3. Apply liquid sealant to the oil pan and engine block.
    4.  
    5. Install the oil pan with the 17 bolts and 2 nuts. Uniformly tighten the bolts and nuts in several passes.
    6.  
    7. Tighten the No. 1 oil pan bolts, as follows:

      10mm head bolt: 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm)
       
      12mm head bolt: 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
       
      14mm head bolt: 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm)
       

    8.  
    9. Install the flywheel housing undercover with the 2 bolts. Tighten the bolts to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
    10.  

  6.  
  7. Install the oil strainer with the 3 nuts. Tighten the nuts to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the No. 2 oil pan, as follows:
    1. Using a non residue solvent, clean both sealing surfaces to the oil pan.
    2.  
    3. Apply liquid sealant to the oil pan and engine block.
    4.  
    5. Install the No. 2 oil pan with the 10 bolts and 2 nuts. Uniformly tighten the bolts and nuts in several passes. Tighten the bolts to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
    6.

  11. Install or connect the following:

    Flywheel housing undercover
     
    Front exhaust pipe bracket to the No. 1 oil pan. Tighten the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
     

  12.  
  13. Install the front exhaust pipe, as follows:

    Temporarily install the 3 new gaskets and the front exhaust pipe with the 2 bolts and 6 nuts
     
    Tighten the 4 exhaust manifolds-to-front exhaust pipe nuts to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm).
     
    Tighten the both front exhaust pipe-to-center exhaust pipe nuts/bolts to 41 ft. lbs. (56 Nm).
     
    Bracket. Tighten both bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
     
    Support stay. Tighten both bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
     

  14.  
  15. Install or connect the following:

    Engine undercover
     
    Right fender apron seal
     
    Right front wheel
     

  16.  
  17. Fill the engine with oil.
  18.  
  19. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  20.  

3.3L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right hand front wheel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the wiper arms.
  12.  
  13. Remove the cowl panel.
  14.  
  15. Remove the wiper link assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove the cowl top to inner brace.
  18.  
  19. Remove the cowl top cover outer sub assembly.
  20.  
  21. Remove the right side apron seal.
  22.  
  23. Remove the A/C compressor to crankshaft pulley belt.
  24.  
  25. Remove the vane pump belt.
  26.  
  27. Remove the number 2 engine mounting stay.
  28.  
  29. Remove the number 2 alternator bracket and the alternator belt adjusting bar.
  30.  
  31. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  32.  
  33. Remove the timing belt cover 1.
  34.  
  35. Remove the timing belt cover 2 by disconnecting the wire protector clamps, unfastening the bolts and removing the cover.
  36.  
  37. Remove the right hand engine mount bracket.
  38.  
  39. Remove the timing belt guide number 2.
  40.  
  41. Remove the timing belt.
  42.  
  43. Remove the number 2 timing belt idler sub assembly, camshaft timing pulley and the number 3 timing belt cover.
  44.  
  45. Remove the number 1 timing belt idler sub assembly and the crankshaft timing pulley.
  46.  
  47. Remove the center exhaust pipe assembly on 4WD models.
  48.  
  49. Remove the front exhaust pipe assembly.
  50.  
  51. Remove the number 3 manifold converter and number 2 exhaust manifold heat shield and then remove the number 2 exhaust manifold converter sub assembly.
  52.  
  53. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector, remove the bolts, adjusting bar bracket and the compressor. Set aside with the hoses still attached.
  54.  
  55. Remove the A/C compressor bracket.
  56.  
  57. On 4 WD model, disconnect the rear engine mounting insulator.
  58.  
  59. Remove the nuts and separate but do not remove the front engine mount insulator.
  60.  
  61. Disconnect the power steering hose from the frame, remove the front right hand engine mounting insulator nuts.
  62.  
  63. Support the engine with a block of wood and a floor jack, raise the engine slightly and remove the front right hand engine mounting insulator.
  64.  
  65. Remove the right hand engine mount bracket.
  66.  
  67. Remove the 10 bolts and 2 nuts to the No. 2 oil pan.
  68.  
  69. Insert the blade of the Oil Pan Seal Cutting tool 09032-00100 between the No. 1 and No. 2 oil pans.
  70.  
  71. Clean the surfaces of the oil pans.
  72.  
  73. Remove the oil strainer nuts and gasket
  74.  
  75. Remove the No. 1 oil pan, as follows:
    1. Remove the 2 bolts and the flywheel housing undercover
    2.  
    3. Remove the 17 bolts and 2 nuts to the No. 1 oil pan.
      NOTE
      Make a note of the position of the each bolt. When replacing the bolts into the oil pan, place each bolt in the position from which it was removed.

    4.  
    5. Remove the oil pan, by prying the portions between the cylinder block and the oil pan.
      NOTE
      Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces.

    6.  
    7. Remove the baffle plate from the No. 1 oil pan.
    8.

  77. Remove the oil pump bolts and the pump.
  78.  

To install:

  1. Clean all mating surfaces of the oil pans.
  2.  
  3. Install the baffle plate to the No. 1 oil pan and tighten to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the No. 1 oil pan, as follows:
    1. Using a non residue solvent, clean both sealing surfaces to the oil pan.
    2.  
    3. Apply liquid sealant to the oil pan and engine block.
    4.  
    5. Install the oil pan with the 17 bolts and 2 nuts. Uniformly tighten the bolts and nuts in several passes.
    6.  
    7. Tighten the No. 1 oil pan bolts, as follows:

      10mm head bolt: 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm)
       
      12mm head bolt: 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
       
      14mm head bolt: 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm)
       

    8.  
    9. Install the flywheel housing undercover with the 2 bolts. Tighten the bolts to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
    10.  

  6.  
  7. Install the oil strainer with the 3 nuts. Tighten the nuts to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the No. 2 oil pan, as follows:
    1. Using a non residue solvent, clean both sealing surfaces to the oil pan.
    2.  
    3. Apply liquid sealant to the oil pan and engine block.
    4.  
    5. Install the No. 2 oil pan with the 10 bolts and 2 nuts. Uniformly tighten the bolts and nuts in several passes. Tighten the bolts to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
    6.  

  10.  
  11. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of removal.
  12.
