Inspection



3.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the oil pump relief valve from its bore and coat it with clean engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Place the valve into its bore and let it fall into the bore smoothly under its own weight. If the valve does not fall smoothly into the bore replace the pump assembly.

  7. Place the pump rotors into the pump with the marks facing upwards.
  8.  
  9. Using a feeler gauge and a straight edge, measure the clearance between the rotors and the straight edge. The side clearance should be 0.0012-0.0035 in. (0.030-0.090 mm). The maximum clearance is 0.0059 in. (0.15mm). if the clearance is more than the maximum specified, replace the pump assembly.

  11. Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the drive and driven pump rotors. The tip clearance should be 0.0043-0.0094 in. (0.110-0.240 mm). The maximum clearance is 0.0138 in. (0.35mm). if the clearance is more than the maximum specified, replace the rotors.

  13. Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the driven rotors and body. The clearance should be 0.0098-0.0128 in. (0.250-0.325 mm). The maximum clearance is 0.0157 in. (0.40mm). if the clearance is more than the maximum specified, replace the pump assembly.

3.3L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Place the pump rotors into the pump with the marks facing upwards.
  4.  
  5. Using a feeler gauge and a straight edge, measure the clearance between the rotors and the straight edge. The side clearance should be 0.0012-0.0035 in. (0.030-0.090 mm). The maximum clearance is 0.0059 in. (0.15mm). if the clearance is more than the maximum specified, replace the pump assembly.

  7. Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the drive and driven pump rotors. The tip clearance should be 0.0043-0.0094 in. (0.110-0.240 mm). The maximum clearance is 0.0138 in. (0.35mm). if the clearance is more than the maximum specified, replace the rotors.
  8.  
  9. Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the driven rotors and body. The clearance should be 0.0098-0.0128 in. (0.250-0.325 mm). The maximum clearance is 0.0157 in. (0.40mm). if the clearance is more than the maximum specified, replace the pump assembly.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Make a note of the position of the each bolt. When replacing the bolts into the oil pump body, place each bolt in the position from which it was removed.



    Oil pan
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor
     
    9 oil pump bolts
     



    Oil pump body, by prying between the oil pump and main bearing cap
     
    O-ring from the cylinder block
     
    Plug, gasket, spring and relief valve from the oil pump body
     
    9 screws, pump body cover, drive and driven rotors
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Driven rotors, drive, pump body cover, using the 9 screws
     
    Oil pump relief valve, spring, gasket and the plug to the oil pump body
     
    New O-ring on the cylinder block
     

  2.  
  3. Using a non residue solvent, clean both sealing surfaces to the oil pump.
  4.  
  5. Apply liquid sealant to the oil pump and engine block.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Be sure to engage the spline teeth of the oil pump drive gear with the large teeth of the crankshaft.



    Oil pump
     



    9 oil pump bolts. Tighten the bolts in several passes to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm), for 10mm or to 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm), for 12mm.
     
    CKP sensor. Tighten the bolt to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Baffle plate to the No. oil pan. Tighten to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    No. 1 oil pan, oil strainer and No. 2 oil pan
     

  8.  
  9. Refill the engine with oil.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine and inspect for leaks.
  12.  
  13. Recheck the engine oil level.
  14.  

3.0L And 3.3L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Oil pan
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor
     
    9 oil pump bolts
     

  4.  


NOTE
Make a note of the position of the each bolt. When replacing the bolts into the oil pump body, place each bolt in the position from which it was removed.



Oil pump body, by prying between the oil pump and main bearing cap
 
O-ring from the cylinder block
 
Plug, gasket, spring and relief valve from the oil pump body
 
9 screws, pump body cover, drive and driven rotors
 

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Driven rotors, drive, pump body cover, using the 9 screws
     
    Oil pump relief valve, spring, gasket and the plug to the oil pump body
     
    New O-ring on the cylinder block

  7. Install or connect the following:

    9 oil pump bolts. On 3.0L engines, tighten the bolts in several passes to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm), for 10mm or to 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm), for 12mm. On 3.3L engines, tighten the bolts in several passes. Tighten bolt A to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm), bolt B to 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) and bolt C to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm). refer to the illustration for bolt locations.
     
    CKP sensor. Tighten the bolt to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Baffle plate to the No. oil pan. Tighten to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    No. 1 oil pan, oil strainer and No. 2 oil pan
     

  8.  
  9. Refill the engine with oil.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine and inspect for leaks.
  12.  
  13. Recheck the engine oil level.
