Transmission Removal & Installation

  1. Remove the engine/transaxle assembly. See Engine Removal and Installation-.

  3. Remove the left and right halfshafts.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect all wiring between the engine and transaxle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the starter.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect all cables between the engine and transaxle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil filler tube.
  12.  
  13. Remove the oil cooler tubes.
  14.  
  15. Remove the engine mount bracket.

  17. With 2wd:
    1. Remove the torque converter cover.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 6 torque converter bolts.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 8 engine-to-transaxle bolts and separate the units.

  19. With 4wd:
    1. Remove the 5 bolts and 1 nut and remove the transfer case stiffener plate.
    2.  
    3. Remove the torque converter cover.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 6 torque converter bolts.
    6.  
    7. Remove the 8 engine-to-transaxle bolts and separate the units.
    8.  
    9. Remove the 2 bolts and 6 nuts. Using a plastic hammer, drive the transfer case from the transaxle.

  21. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

    See the illustration: bolt A 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm); bolt B 34 ft. lbs. (46 Nm); bolt C 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm)

    Transfer case bolts and nuts: 51 ft. lbs. (69 Nm). Use a new gasket.
     
    Torque converter bolts (green bolt first): 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm)
     
    Stiffener plate: 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm)
     
    Engine mount bracket: 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)
