Parking Brake Shoes

Removal & Installation



The rear drum brake shoes serve as the parking brakes. Refer to the procedures under Rear Drum Brakes.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheels.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake caliper.
  8.  
  9. Use a suitable piece of wire to suspend the caliper assembly from the upper control arm. This will prevent the weight of the caliper from being supported by the brake flex hose which will damage the hose.
  10.  
  11. Remove the caliper bracket bolts and remove the bracket.
  12.  
  13. Place match marks on the rotor and hub.
  14.  
  15. Remove the rotor. If the disc cannot be removed easily, turn the parking brake adjuster until the rotor turns freely and remove the rotor.
  16.  
  17. Use needle nosed pliers to remove the left hand No:1 parking brake shoe return springs.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the tension spring from the left hand No:1 parking brake shoe.
  20.  
  21. Slide out the left hand No:1 parking brake shoe assembly and remove it.
  22.  
  23. Remove the left hand No:1 hold down spring and cups, then remove the hold down spring pin.
  24.  
  25. Remove the left hand No:1 parking brake shoe adjuster assembly.
  26.  
  27. Remove the left hand No:1 parking brake shoe strut.
  28.  
  29. Disconnect the return spring from the left hand No:2 parking brake shoe and remove the tension spring.
  30.  
  31. Slide out the left hand No:2 parking brake shoe assembly and remove it.
  32.  
  33. Remove the left hand No:2 hold down spring and cups, then remove the hold down spring pin.
  34.  
  35. Use needle nosed pliers to disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake shoe lever and the left hand No:2 parking brake shoe.

To install:

  1. Apply high temperature grease to the surfaces where the parking brake shoe and backing plate contact.
  2.  
  3. Install the shoe lever and shim to the rear shoe using a new C-washer.
  4.  
  5. Measure the distance between the C-washer and shoe, the clearance should be 0.0138 inch (0.35mm). If the clearance is more than specified, use a 3, 6 0r 9mm shim to reduce the clearance to the proper specification.
  6.  
  7. Using needle nosed plies, connect the parking brake cable to the parking brake shoe lever.
  8.  
  9. Install the left hand No:2 parking brake shoe assembly with the hold down compression spring pin, compression spring and cups.
  10.  
  11. Apply high temperature grease to the adjuster assembly moving components and install the adjuster assembly.
  12.  
  13. Install the parking brake shoe strut.
  14.  
  15. Install the left hand No:1 parking brake shoe assembly with the hold down compression spring pin, compression spring and cups.
  16.  
  17. Install the tension spring and 2 return springs.
  18.  
  19. Adjust the parking brake.
  20.  
  21. Install the rotor and align the match marks.
  22.  
  23. Install the caliper bracket and tighten the bracket to steering knuckle bolts to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm) on 2004-06 models.
  24.  
  25. Install the caliper and wheels.
