  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Support the axle beam with jacks.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheels
     
    Interior service covers to access the upper shock mounts
     
    Both nuts and retainers from the upper mount
     
    Shock absorber
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the shock absorber. Tighten the lower mounting bolt to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
  2.  
  3. If the upper cushion is showing signs of wear, replace it.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Upper shock absorber. Tighten the nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Wheels

  1. Remove the wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the shock absorber cap.
  4.  
  5. Support the axle with a jack.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper locknut, retainer and bushing.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower nut and remove the shock.
  10.  
  11. Remove the spring bumper from the shock.
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse of removal. Torque the upper end nut to 22 ft. lbs. Install the lower end nut loosely. Raise the axle to load the shock. For 2wd models, the shock absorber length should be 9.22 in. (234mm); for 4wd, it should be 10.16 in. (258mm), then tighten the lower end nut to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm). If you can-t reach the nut in this position, support the rear axle and place 198 lbs. (90 kg) in the trunk.
