The wheel bearings are sealed units and are not adjustable.

Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Brake drum
     
    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor connector
     
    4 rear axle hub assembly nuts
     
    Hub assembly
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New hub assembly. Tighten the nuts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
     
    ABS speed sensor
     

  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Brake drum
     
    Wheels
     

  4.  
  5. Test drive the vehicle.
  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Brake drum, if equipped
     

  4.  
  5. If equipped with disk brakes, remove the following:

    Flexible brake hose from the rear strut assembly
     
    Brake caliper and support it on using wire
     
    Brake rotor
     

  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor connector
     
    4 rear axle hub assembly nuts
     
    Hub assembly
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New hub assembly. Tighten the nuts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
     
    ABS speed sensor
     

  2.  
  3. If equipped with disc brakes, install the following:

    Brake rotor
     
    Brake caliper. Tighten the mounting bolts to 34 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
     
    Flexible brake hose to the rear strut assembly. Tighten the mounting bolt to 21 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
     

  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Brake drum, if equipped
     
    Wheels
     

  6.  
  7. Test drive the vehicle.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Brake drum

    Hub assembly
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New hub assembly. Tighten the nuts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).

  3. Install or connect the following:

    Brake drum
     
    Wheels
     

  4.  
  5. Test drive the vehicle.

  1. Remove the wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the brake drum (if equipped) or caliper and rotor. Hang the caliper out of the way.
    1. Place a dial indicator near the center of the axle hub and check the backlash in the bearing shaft direction.
    2.  
    3. Backlash maximum should read 0.0020 inch (0.05mm). If greater than specified, replace the bearing.
    4.  
    5. Using the dial indicator, check the deviation at the surface of the axle hub outside and hub bolt. Maximum is 0.0020 inch (0.05mm). If greater than specified, replace the axle hub.
    6.

  5. Remove the ABS sensor wire.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 4 bolts and the hub/bearing assembly.
  8.  
  9. Installation is the reverse of removal. Torque the hub bolts to 41 ft. lbs. (56 Nm).

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.

  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake drum (if equipped) or caliper and rotor. Hang the caliper out of the way.

  1. Remove the wheel.
  2.  
  3. Unstake and remove the axle shaft nut.
  4.  
  5. Remove the caliper and rotor. Hang the caliper out of the way.
