Transmission Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transmission with the engine and place it on a stand
     
    Bolts, 2 stiffener plates and rear endplate
     

  4.  
  5. Turn the crankshaft to gain access to the torque converter bolts.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Torque converter bolts
     
    Starter
     
    Transmission-to-engine bolts
     
    Transmission
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission to the engine. Tighten the bolts to 53 ft. lbs. (71 Nm).
     
    Starter. Tighten both bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
     
    Torque converter. Tighten the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
     
    Stiffener plate and rear endplate. Tighten the bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
     
    Starter wires
     
    Transmission with the engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the driveshaft.
    NOTE
    Some vehicles are also equipped with a center bearing assembly, remove if equipped.

  6.  
  7. Drain the transmission fluid.
  8.  
  9. Remove the transmission dipstick. Remove the two bolts and remove the transmission oil filler tube assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the three bolts and clamps. Using tool SST09023-12701, disconnect the oil cooler outlet tube number one.
  12.  
  13. Remove the three bolts and clamps. Using tool SST09023-12701, disconnect the oil cooler inlet tube number one.
  14.  
  15. Remove the manifold stay.
  16.  
  17. On cable type, disconnect the transmission control cable assembly.
  18.  
  19. On floor shift (rod type), remove the clip and separate the floor shift gear shifting rod from the transmission.
  20.  
  21. Support the transmission assembly, with a transmission jack.
  22.  
  23. Remove the eight bolts and two front suspension member brackets.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor connector. Remove the four bolts from the frame crossmember subassembly number three.
  26.  
  27. Remove the four nuts, four bolts and frame crossmember number three.
  28.  
  29. Remove the starter.
  30.  
  31. Tilt the transmission assembly downward. Disconnect all electrical wires and hoses that will interfere with the removal of the transmission.
    NOTE
    When tilting the transmission assembly downward, make sure that the cooling fan does not hit the radiator fan shroud.

  33. Remove the flywheel housing dust shield. Remove the torque converter to flexplate retaining bolts.
  34.  
  35. Remove the transmission assembly retaining bolts. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
  36.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. When installing the torque converter on to the transmission mainshaft, use a calipers and straight edge and measure between the transmission and the end of the surface of the driveplate. Specification should be 0.8772 inch.
  4.  
  5. Use a calipers and straight edge and measure the dimension -B- shown in the illustration and check that -B- is greater than -A-. Specification should be 0.9165 inch or more.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the three upper transmission to engine retaining bolts to 52 ft. lbs. and the four lower bolts to 27 ft. lbs.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the torque converter to flexplate retaining bolts to 35 ft. lbs.
  10.  
  11. Be sure to fill the transmission with the proper grade and type transmission fluid.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine and check for leaks, correct as required.
    NOTE
    Perform the automatic transmission initialization procedure when replacing the automatic transmission, engine or ECM.

  14.  
  15. On the A340E automatic transmission, initialization is completed by connecting and disconnecting the negative battery cable.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) level gauge
     
    Engine undercover
     

  4.  
  5. Drain the transmission fluid.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Throttle cable
     
    No. 1 fan shroud
     

  8.  
  9. Remove the transmission shift lever assembly and the transfer shift lever, as follows:

    Rear console box
     
    Front console box with the transfer shift lever knob
     
    Connectors
     
    Shift control rod
     
    Transmission shift lever assembly
     
    Snapring and pull it from the transfer case
     
    Oil filler pipe, with the O-ring
     
    Front and rear driveshaft
     
    Exhaust pipe
     
    Speedometer cable
     
    No. 2 Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) connector
     
    Solenoid connector
     
    Transfer case neutral position switch connector
     
    Transfer case L4 position switch connector
     
    Transfer indicator switch
     
    Oil cooler pipe
     
    Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) temperature sensor connector
     
    Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch connector
     
    Starter
     
    4 stabilizer bar bracket mounting bolts
     

  10.  
  11. Remove the torque converter bolts, as follows:

    Flywheel housing undercover
     
    Torque converter clutch mounting bolts, while turning the crankshaft to gain access
     

  12.  
  13. Remove the front differential rear mounting cushion, as follows:
    NOTE
    Be careful not to touch the torque converter clutch housing and the front differential companion flange



    Nut, using a hexagon wrench
     
    Front differential by lifting it
     



    2 rear mount cushion bolts
     

  14.  
  15. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Support the transmission-s rear side
     
    4 engine rear mount bolts
     
    4 nuts, bolts and the crossmember, by supporting the transmission
     
    Transmission
     

  16.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Install the green colored bolt, then the 5 others. Tighten the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).



    Transmission. Tighten the engine-to-transmission bolts to 53 ft. lbs. (71 Nm).
     
    Crossmember. Tighten the bolts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
     
    Engine rear mount. Tighten the bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
     
    Front differential rear mount cushion. Tighten the nut to 64 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
     
    Torque converter clutch mount bolt
     



    Flywheel housing undercover. Tighten the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm) for 3.4L engine or to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm) for 2.7L (3RZ-FE/M) engine.
     
    Stabilizer bar bracket bolts. Tighten the 4 bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Starter. Tighten the bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
     
    Remaining components
     
    ATF level gauge
     

  2.  
  3. Fill and check the fluid level.
  4.  
  5. Test drive and check for proper shifting.
  6.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the number one engine undercover assembly. Remove the number two engine undercover assembly.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the oxygen sensor. Remove the exhaust pipe assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the driveshaft and center bearing assembly.
  10.  
  11. Drain the transmission fluid. Remove the number one manifold stay. Remove the number two manifold stay.
  12.  
  13. Remove the three bolts and clamps. Using tool SST09023-12701, disconnect the oil cooler outlet tube number one.
  14.  
  15. Remove the three bolts and clamps. Using tool SST09023-12701, disconnect the oil cooler inlet tube number one.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the transmission control cable assembly. Disconnect all electrical wires and hoses that will interfere with the removal of the transmission.
  18.  
  19. Remove the starter.
  20.  
  21. Remove the flywheel housing dust shield cover.
  22.  
  23. Support the transmission assembly, with a transmission jack.
  24.  
  25. Remove the four bolts from the frame crossmember subassembly number three.
  26.  
  27. Remove the four nuts, four bolts and frame crossmember number three.
  28.  
  29. Remove the torque converter to flexplate retaining bolts.
  30.  
  31. Remove the transmission assembly retaining bolts. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
  32.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. When installing the torque converter on to the transmission mainshaft, use a calipers and straight edge and measure between the transmission and the end of the surface of the driveplate, dimension -A-.
  4.  
  5. Use a calipers and straight edge and measure the dimension -B- shown in the illustration and check that -B- is greater than -A-. Specification should be plus 1mm or more.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the five upper transmission to engine retaining bolts to 53 ft. lbs. and the four lower bolts to 27 ft. lbs.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the torque converter to flexplate retaining bolts to 35 ft. lbs.
  10.  
  11. Be sure to fill the transmission with the proper grade and type transmission fluid.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine and check for leaks, correct as required.
    NOTE
    Perform the automatic transmission initialization procedure when replacing the automatic transmission, engine or ECM.

  14.  
  15. On the A750E automatic transmission, initialization is performed using the intelligent tester tool.
  16.  
  17. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  18.  
  19. Connect the intelligent tester tool together with the controller area network vehicle interface module (CAN VIN) to the DLC3.
  20.  
  21. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
  22.  
  23. Push the intelligent tester tool main switch to the ON position.
  24.  
  25. Select the items, DIAGNOSIS/ENHANCED OBD II.
  26.  
  27. Perform the reset memory procedure from the ENGINE menu.
    NOTE
    After performing the reset memory, be sure to perform the road test procedure. For roadtest procedure information, refer to the intelligent tester instruction manual.
