Valve Lash (Clearance) Adjustment

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine coolant. Remove the V bank cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the two water bypass hoses. Disconnect the fuel vapor feed hose. Disconnect the ventilation hose. Disconnect the VSV connectors.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the throttle body motor connector. Separate the three wire harness clamps and hose clamp.
  12.  
  13. If equipped with manual transmission, remove the nut, then separate the clutch flexible hose bracket from the surge tank stay.
  14.  
  15. Remove the two bolts and the throttle body bracket. Remove the bolt and the oil baffle plate. Remove the four bolts and the two serge tank stays.
  16.  
  17. Remove the two nuts. Remove the four bolts, intake air surge tank and gasket.
  18.  
  19. Remove the ignition coil assembly.
  20.  
  21. Remove the cylinder head cover retaining bolts. Remove the cylinder head cover.
  22.  
  23. Turn the crankshaft pulley until its groove and the timing mark -0- of the timing chain cover are aligned. If not aligned at TDC of the compression stroke, turn the crankshaft one complete revolution, in the direction of rotation.
  24.  
  25. Using a feeler gauge, check and record the valve clearance on the following valves: right bank, exhaust number three and intake number one, left bank exhaust number two and intake number six.
  26.  
  27. Rotate the crankshaft 240 degrees clockwise and using a feeler gauge, check and record the following valves: right bank, exhaust number five and intake number three, left bank exhaust number four and intake number two.
  28.  
  29. Rotate the crankshaft 240 degrees clockwise and using a feeler gauge, check and record the following valves: right bank, exhaust number one and intake number five, left bank exhaust number six and intake number four.

  31. If adjustment is required, position the engine at TDC on the compression stroke.
  32.  
  33. Place paint marks on the number one chain links corresponding to the timing marks of the camshaft timing gears.
  34.  
  35. Remove the chain tensioner assembly number one. Remove the number two camshaft.
  36.  
  37. Remove the chain tensioner assembly number two. Remove the camshaft.
  38.  
  39. Remove the number four camshaft subassembly. Remove the chain tensioner assembly number three.
  40.  
  41. Remove the number three camshaft subassembly.
  42.  
  43. Remove the valve lifters.
  44.  
  45. Determine the replacement adjusting shim size according to the following formula or use the adjusting shim charts.
  46.  
  47. Using a micrometer, measure the thickness of the removed shim. Calculate the thickness of a new shim so that the valve clearance comes within the specified value.

    T: Thickness of the removed shim
     
    A: Measured valve clearance
     
    N: Thickness of the new shim
     

    1. Intake: N = T + A
    2.  
    3. Exhaust: N = T + A
    4.

  49. Select a new lifter with a thickness as close as possible to the calculated value.

  51. Install removed components in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  52.  
  53. When installing the cylinder head cover, apply a continuous bead (0.08-0.12 inch) of seal packing, part number 08826-00080 or equivalent, to the cylinder head as indicated in the illustration. Install the seal washers onto the bolts. Install the cylinder head cover bolts and nuts. Tighten bolts -A- to 7.4 ft. lbs. Tighten bolts -B- to 80 inch lbs. Tighten nuts to 80 inch lbs.
    NOTE
    Be sure to remove any oil from the contact surfaces of the cylinder head cover and the cylinder head. Install the cover within three minutes after applying the seal packing. Tighten the bolts to specification within fifteen minutes after installing the cover. Do not add engine oil for at least two hours after installing the cover.

  55. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.

  57. Be sure to fill the engine with the proper grade and type engine coolant.
  58.  
  59. Be sure to fill the engine with the proper grade and type engine oil.
  60.  
  61. Start the engine and check for leaks. Correct as required.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Air intake connector
     
    Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hoses
     
    Spark plug wires
     
    4 clamps and the engine wiring harness
     
    Air conditioning compressor connector, if equipped with air conditioning
     
    Oil pressure sensor connector
     
    Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor connector
     
    Distributor connector
     
    Cylinder head cover

  5. Set the No. 1 cylinder to Top Dead Center (TDC) of the compression stroke, as follows:
    1. Turn the crankshaft pulley clockwise and align its groove with the 0 mark on the timing chain cover.
    2.  
    3. Check that the timing marks (1 and 2 dots) of the camshaft drive and driven gears are in a straight line on the cylinder head surface. If not, turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360 degrees) and align the marks.
    4.

  7. Inspect the valve clearance, as follows:
    1. Measure the clearance between the valve lifter and the camshaft. Measure the 1st and 2nd intake and the 1st and 3rd exhaust valves.
    2.  
    3. Turn the crankshaft pulley 1 revolution (360 degrees) and align the marks as above. Measure the 3rd and 4th intake and the 2nd and 4th exhaust valves.
    4.

  9. Valve clearance -cold- should be:

    Intake: 0.006-0.010 in. (0.15-0.25mm)
     
    Exhaust: 0.010-0.014 in. (0.25-0.35mm)

  11. Adjust the valve clearance by using adjusting shims, as follows:
    1. Turn the equipment driveshaft so that the cam lobe for the valve to be adjusted faces up.
    2.  
    3. Using SST 09248-55040, press down the valve lifter and place SST 09248-05420, between the camshaft and the valve lifter.
    4.  
    5. Remove SST 09248-55040.
    6.  
    7. Remove the adjusting shim with a small flat prying tool and a magnetic finger.
    8.  
    9. Determine the replacement adjusting shim size according to the following formula or use the adjusting shim charts.
    10.  
    11. Using a micrometer, measure the thickness of the removed shim. Calculate the thickness of a new shim so that the valve clearance comes within the specified value:

      T: Thickness of the removed shim
       
      A: Measured valve clearance
       
      N: Thickness of the new shim
       

    12.  
    13. Intake: N = T + (A-0.008 in. (0.20mm))
    14.  
    15. Exhaust: N = T + (A-0.012 in. (0.30mm))
    16.  
    17. Install a new adjusting shim. Place it on the valve lifter. Using the SST 09248-55040, press down the valve lifter.
    18.  
    19. Remove the SST 09248-05420.
    20.  
    21. Recheck the valve clearance.

  13. Install or connect the following:

    Cylinder head cover
     
    Engine wiring harness and clamps
     
    Distributor connector
     
    ECT sensor connector
     
    Oil pressure sensor connector
     
    Air conditioning compressor connector, if disconnected
     
    Spark plug wires
     
    PCV hoses
     
    Air intake connector
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  14.  
  15. Check the ignition timing.

2TR-FE Engine



This engine is equipped with hydraulic lash adjusters.

3RZ-FE Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Intake air connector
     
    Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hoses
     
    Spark plug wires
     
    Engine wiring harness clamps and harness
     
    Air conditioning compressor connector, if equipped with air conditioning
     
    Oil pressure sensor connector
     
    Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor connector
     
    Distributor connector
     
    Cylinder head cover
     

  8.  
  9. Set the No. 1 cylinder to Top Dead Center (TDC) of the compression stroke, as follows:
    1. Turn the crankshaft pulley clockwise and align its groove with the 0 mark on the timing chain cover.
    2.  
    3. Check that the timing marks (1 and 2 dots) of the camshaft drive and driven gears are in a straight line on the cylinder head surface. If not, turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360 degrees) and align the marks.
    4.

  11. Inspect the valve clearance, as follows:
    1. Measure the clearance between the valve lifter and the camshaft. Measure the 1st and 2nd intake and the 1st and 3rd exhaust valves.
    2.  
    3. Turn the crankshaft pulley 1 revolution (360 degrees) and align the marks as above. Measure the 3rd and 4th intake and the 2nd and 4th exhaust valves.
    4.

  13. Valve clearance cold should be:

    Intake: 0.006-0.010 in. (0.15-0.25mm)
     
    Exhaust: 0.010-0.014 in. (0.25-0.35mm)

  15. Adjust the valve clearance by using adjusting shims, as follows:
    1. Turn the camshaft so the cam lobe for the valve to be adjusted faces up.
    2.  
    3. Using SST 09248-55040, press down the valve lifter and place SST 09248-05420, between the camshaft and the valve lifter. Remove SST 09248-55040.
    4.  
    5. Remove the adjusting shim with a small flat prying tool and a magnetic finger.
    6.  
    7. Determine the replacement adjusting shim size according to the following formula or use the adjusting shim charts.
    8.  
    9. Using a micrometer, measure the thickness of the removed shim. Calculate the thickness of a new shim so the valve clearance comes within the specified value.

    11. Intake: N = T + (A-0.008 in. (0.20mm))

    15. Install a new adjusting shim. Place it on the valve lifter. Using the SST 09248-55040, press down the valve lifter and remove SST 09248-05420.

    17. Recheck the valve clearance.

  17. Install or connect the following:

    Cylinder head cover
     
    Engine wiring harness and clamps
     
    Distributor connector
     
    ECT sensor connector
     
    Oil pressure sensor connector
     
    Air conditioning compressor connector, if disconnected
     
    Spark plug wires
     
    PCV hoses
     
    Intake air connector
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  18.  
  19. Refill with engine coolant.
  20.  
  21. Check the ignition timing.
  22.  

5VZ-FE Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Air intake connector
     
    Cylinder head cover

  9. Set the No. 1 cylinder to Top Dead Center (TDC) of the compression stroke, as follows:
    1. Turn the crankshaft pulley clockwise and align its groove with the 0 mark on the timing chain cover.

  11. Inspect the valve clearance, as follows:
    1. Measure the clearance between the valve lifter and the camshaft. Measure the 1st intake and the 3rd exhaust valves on the right head and the 6th intake and the 2nd exhaust valves on the left head.
    2.  
    3. Turn the crankshaft 2 / 3 of a revolution (240 degrees) and adjust the 3rd intake and the 5th exhaust valves on the right head and the 2nd intake and the 4th exhaust valves on the left head.
    4.  
    5. Turn the crankshaft 2 / 3 of a revolution (240 degrees) and adjust the 5th intake and the 1st exhaust valves on the right head and the 4th intake and the 6th exhaust valves on the left head.
    6.

  13. Valve clearance cold should be:

    Intake: 0.006-0.009 in. (0.13-0.23mm)
     
    Exhaust: 0.011-0.014 in. (0.27-0.37mm)

  15. Adjust the valve clearance by using adjusting shims, as follows:
    1. Turn the equipment camshaft so that the cam lobe for the valve to be adjusted faces up.
    2.  
    3. Turn the valve lifter so that the notches are perpendicular to the camshaft.
    4.  
    5. Using SST 09248-55040, press down the valve lifter and place SST 09248-05420, between the camshaft and the valve lifter. Remove SST 09248-55040.
    6.  
    7. Remove the adjusting shim with a small flat prying tool and a magnetic finger.
    8.  
    9. Determine the replacement adjusting shim size according to the following formula or use the adjusting shim charts.
    10.  
    11. Using a micrometer, measure the thickness of the removed shim. Calculate the thickness of a new shim so that the valve clearance comes within the specified value.

    13. Intake: N = T + (A-0.007 in. (0.18mm))
    14.  
    15. Exhaust: N = T + (A-0.013 in. (0.32mm))

    17. Install a new adjusting shim. Place it on the valve lifter. Using the SST 09248-55040, press down the valve lifter and remove SST 09248-05420.
    18.  
    19. Recheck the valve clearance.

  17. Install or connect the following:

    Cylinder head cover
     
    Intake air connector
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  18.  
  19. Refill with engine coolant.
  20.  
  21. Start the engine and check for leaks.
