Shock Absorbers

Removal & Installation



2-Wheel Drive

Fig. Front shock absorber and related components-2WD 2001-2004

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Shock absorber from the lower control arm
     
    Nut, retainers and the cushion from the top of the shock absorber
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Retainers and cushion from the shock absorber
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Retainers and cushion to the shock absorber
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Retainers, cushion and nut to the top of the shock absorber. Tighten the nut to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Lower shock absorber-to-lower control arm. Tighten the bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm)
     
    Wheels
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the speed sensor connector. Remove the two bolts. Separate the skid control sensor wire.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolt and separate the front flexible hose.
  10.  
  11. Remove the upper control arm.
  12.  
  13. Remove the shock absorber lower bolt and nut. Remove the three nuts on the upper side of the shock absorber.
  14.  
  15. Remove the shock absorber and coil spring from the vehicle.
  16.  

To install:


NOTE
Always fully tighten rubber bushings when the wheels are in full contact with the ground and the vehicle is at curb height. Bounce the vehicle up and down several times to stabilize the suspension, prior to final tightening of these components.

  1. Position the shock absorber to its mounting on the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. On the left side, install the coil spring onto the body with the lower end of the coil spring facing the outer side of the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. On the right side, install the coil spring onto the body with the lower end of the coil spring facing the inner side of the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Install the upper retaining nuts. Torque to 47 ft. lbs.
  8.  
  9. Temporarily tighten the lower shock retaining bolt.
  10.  
  11. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  12.  
  13. Final tightening torque for the lower shock absorber mounting bolt is 61 ft. lbs.
  14.  
  15. Check and adjust the alignment, as required.
  16.  

4-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine undercover assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the stabilizer bar.
  10.  
  11. Remove the cotter pin and nut. Using the proper tool, separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle arm.
  12.  
  13. Remove the shock absorber lower bolt and nut. Remove the three nuts on the upper side of the shock absorber.
  14.  
  15. Remove the shock absorber and coil spring from the vehicle.
  16.  

To install:


NOTE

  3. On the left side, install the coil spring onto the body with the lower end of the coil spring facing the outer side of the vehicle.

  5. On the right side, install the coil spring onto the body with the lower end of the coil spring facing the inner side of the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Install the upper retaining nuts. Torque to 47 ft. lbs.
  8.  
  9. Temporarily tighten the lower shock retaining bolt.
  10.  
  11. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  12.  
  13. Final tightening torque for the lower shock absorber mounting bolt is 61 ft. lbs.
  14.  
  15. Check and adjust the alignment, as required.
  16.
