1GR-FE Engine



With Intelligent Tester
  1. Warm up the engine.
  2.  
  3. Connect the tool to the DLC3.
  4.  
  5. Select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS/ENHANCED OBDII/DATA LIST/PRIMARY/IGN ADVANCE.
  6.  
  7. Inspect the ignition timing during idling.
  8.  
  9. Check that the ignition timing advances immediately when the engine speed is increased.
  10.  

Without Intelligent Tester
  1. Using too SST09843-18040, connect terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) of the DLC3.
    NOTE
    Be careful not to connect the wrong terminals, as engine damage may occur.

  3. Remove the air cleaner. Pull out the wire harness.

  5. Connect the test probe of the timing light to the wire of the ignition coil connector for the No. 1 cylinder.
    NOTE
    Be sure to use a timing light that detects the first signal. After checking be sure to wrap the wire harness with tape.

  7. Check the ignition timing during idling. Check that the ignition timing is within specification. Be sure all electrical systems are OFF.

2RZ-FE Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Warm the engine to normal operating temperature.
  4.  
  5. Attach a hand-held tester to the Data Link Connector 3 (DLC3) under the dashboard on the driver-s side.
  6.  
  7. Jumper terminals T E1 and E 1 of the DLC1.
  8.  
  9. Check the idle speed.
  10.  
  11. Aim the timing light at the timing indicator and check the ignition timing. Timing should be between 3-7 degrees BTDC at idle.
  12.  
  13. For a further check on ignition timing, disconnect the hand-held tester from the DLC3 and disconnect the jumper wire from the DLC1.
  14.  
  15. Point the timing light at the crankshaft pulley and read the timing. Timing should be between 7-18 degrees BTDC at idle.
  16.  
  17. Remove timing light from the engine.

With Intelligent Tester
  1. Connect the tool to the DLC3.
  2.  
  3. Turn the ignition switch ON.
  4.  
  5. Turn the tester ON.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and allow it to warm up.
  8.  
  9. Select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS/ENHANCED OBDII/DATA LIST/PRIMARY/IGN ADVANCE. Check that the ignition timing advances immediately when the engine speed is increased.
  10.  

Without Intelligent Tester
  1. Turn the ignition switch ON.
  2.  
  3. Start the engine and allow it to warm up.
  4.  
  5. Install the timing light.
    NOTE
    Be sure to use a timing light that detects the first signal. After checking be sure to wrap the wire harness with tape.
