Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    CAUTION
    After the negative battery cable has been disconnected, wait at least 1 1 / 2 minutes for the air bag module to deplete its energy.

  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel by performing the following procedure:
    1. Position the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
    2.  
    3. At both sides of the steering wheel, remove the side covers.
    4.  
    5. Using a Torx® wrench, loosen the steering wheel Torx® screws until the screw-s circumference ring catches on the screw case.
    6.  
    7. Carefully, lift the air bag module, disconnect the electrical connector and remove the air bag.
      CAUTION
      Place the air bag module in a safe location with the front facing upward.

    8.  
    9. Remove the steering wheel nut.
    10.  
    11. Using a steering wheel puller, press the steering wheel from the steering column.
    12.  

  6.  
  7. Remove the instrument panel and reinforcement by performing the following procedure:
    1. Remove the steering column cover screws and the covers.
    2.  
    3. Remove the combination switch-to-steering column screws and the combination switch.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 2 hood lock release lever screws and the hood lock release lever.
    6.  
    7. Remove the fuse box opening cover.
    8.  
    9. Remove the 4 lower left side finish panel bolts, the screw and the panel.
    10.  
    11. If equipped, remove the 2 rear console box bolts/screws and the rear console box.
    12.  
    13. Remove the front console box.
    14.  
    15. Remove the 2 upper console box mounting bracket screws and the bracket.
    16.  
    17. Remove the 2 lower center cover clips and the cover.
    18.  
    19. Remove the No. 2 heater-to-register duct screw and the duct.
    20.  
    21. Remove the heater control knobs.
    22.  
    23. Remove the heater control panel.
    24.  
    25. Remove the 2 center cluster finish panel screws, disengage the 5 clips, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the panel.
    26.  
    27. Pry out the cigar lighter hole bezel.
    28.  
    29. Remove the front ashtray and the center cluster finish panel retainer.
    30.  
    31. Pry out the starter switch bezel.
    32.  
    33. Remove the 3 cluster finish panel screws and the panel.
    34.  
    35. Remove the radio and stereo opening cover.
    36.  
    37. Remove the combination meter and disconnect the electrical connectors.
    38.  
    39. Remove the 2 No. 1 register screws and the register.
    40.  
    41. Remove the No. 1 heater-to-register duct screw and the duct.
    42.  
    43. If equipped with a column shifter, disconnect the transmission control cable from the steering column.
    44.  
    45. Remove the steering column-to-instrument panel nuts/bolts and the lower steering column joint bolt; then, carefully, remove the steering column.
    46.  
    47. Remove the 2 glove compartment door screws and the door.
    48.  
    49. Remove the 3 glove compartment reinforcement screws and the reinforcement.
    50.  
    51. Remove the No. 4 heater-to-register duct.
    52.  
    53. Disconnect the No. 1 undercover and disconnect the passenger-s side air bag module electrical connector.
    54.  
    55. Remove the 3 lower No. 2 finish panel screws and the panel.
    56.  
    57. Remove the heater control screws.
    58.  
    59. Remove the lower center finish panel.
    60.  
    61. Remove the instrument panel-to-chassis nuts/bolts and the instrument panel.
    62.  
    63. Remove the 3 No. 1 brace bolts and the brace.
    64.  
    65. Remove the 2 No. 2 brace bolts and the brace.
    66.  
    67. Remove the center heater-to-register duct.
    68.  
    69. Remove the defroster nozzle.
    70.  
    71. Remove the reinforcement-to-chassis 3 bolts, 4 nuts and the reinforcement.

To install:

  1. Install the instrument panel and reinforcement by performing the following procedure:
    1. Install the reinforcement-to-chassis 3 bolts, 4 nuts and the reinforcement.
    2.  
    3. Install the defroster nozzle.
    4.  
    5. Install the center heater-to-register duct.
    6.  
    7. Install the No. 2 brace and the 2 brace bolts.
    8.  
    9. Install the No. 1 brace and the 3 brace bolts.
    10.  
    11. Install the instrument panel and the instrument panel-to-chassis nuts/bolts.
    12.  
    13. Install the lower center finish panel.
    14.  
    15. Install the heater control screws.
    16.  
    17. Install the lower No. 2 finish panel and the 3 panel screws.
    18.  
    19. Connect the passenger-s side air bag module electrical connector and the No. 1 undercover.
    20.  
    21. Install the No. 4 heater-to-register duct.
    22.  
    23. Install the glove compartment reinforcement and the 3 reinforcement screws.
    24.  
    25. Install the glove compartment door and the 2 door screws.
    26.  
    27. Install the steering column and torque the steering column-to-instrument panel nuts/bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm) and the lower steering column joint bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
    28.  
    29. If equipped with a column shifter, connect the transmission control cable to the steering column.
    30.  
    31. Install the No. 1 heater-to-register duct and the duct screw.
    32.  
    33. Install the No. 1 register and the 2 register screws.
    34.  
    35. Install the combination meter and connect the electrical connectors.
    36.  
    37. Install the radio and stereo opening cover.
    38.  
    39. Install the cluster finish panel and the 3 panel screws.
    40.  
    41. Pry out the starter switch bezel.
    42.  
    43. Install the front ashtray and the center cluster finish panel retainer.
    44.  
    45. Install the cigar lighter hole bezel.
    46.  
    47. Install the center cluster finish panel, engage the 5 clips, connect the electrical connectors and install the 2 panel screws.
    48.  
    49. Install the heater control panel.
    50.  
    51. Install the heater control knobs.
    52.  
    53. Install the No. 2 heater-to-register duct and the duct screw.
    54.  
    55. Install the lower center cover and engage the 2 clips.
    56.  
    57. Install the upper console box mounting bracket and the 2 bracket screws.
    58.  
    59. Install the front console box.
    60.  
    61. If equipped, install the rear console box and the 2 rear console box bolts/screws.
    62.  
    63. Install the lower left side finish panel, the 4 bolts and the screw.
    64.  
    65. Install the fuse box opening cover.
    66.  
    67. Install the hood lock release lever and the 2 hood lock release lever screws.
    68.  
    69. Install the combination switch-to-steering column and the combination switch screws.
    70.  
    71. Install the steering column cover and the covers screws.
    72.  

  2.  
  3. Install the steering wheel by performing the following procedure:
    1. Install the steering wheel from the steering column.
    2.  
    3. Install the steering wheel nut and torque to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Carefully, install the air bag module and connect the electrical connector.
    6.  
    7. Using a Torx® wrench, tighten the steering wheel screws to 78 inch lbs. (8.8 Nm).
    8.  
    9. At both sides of the steering wheel, install the side covers.
    10.

  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Properly disarm the SRS system.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    CAUTION
    After the negative battery cable has been disconnected, wait at least 1 1 / 2 minutes for the air bag module to deplete its energy.

  7. Remove the front windshield wiper arm head cap. Remove the wiper arms.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right and left front fender to cowl side seals. Remove the cowl top ventilator louver subassembly.
  10.  
  11. Position the front wheels in the straight ahead position.
  12.  
  13. Remove the lower number two steering wheel cover after disengaging the two claws using the proper tool.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lower number three steering wheel cover after disengaging the two claws using the proper tool.
  16.  
  17. Using a torx socket wrench loosen the two retaining screws until the groove along the screw circumference fits in the screw case.
  18.  
  19. Remove the lower number two steering wheel cover after disengaging the two claws using the proper tool.
  20.  
  21. Pull the steering pad out of the steering wheel assembly and support the steering pad using your hand.
    NOTE
    Take care as not to pull the air bag wire harness.

  23. Disconnect the horn ground harness from the steering pad. Disconnect the air bag connectors. Remove the steering pad.

  25. Remove the steering wheel retainer nut. Using the proper removal tool, remove the steering wheel from the steering column.

  27. Disengage the two claws, using the proper tool, and remove the lower steering column cover.
  28.  
  29. Disengage the claw, using the proper tool, and remove the upper steering column cover.
  30.  
  31. To remove the spiral cable assembly, disconnect the air bag connector and the connector from the spiral cable subassembly. Take care as not to damage the air bag with the harness.
  32.  
  33. Disengage the three claws and remove the spiral cable subassembly.
  34.  
  35. Remove the windshield wiper switch assembly.
  36.  
  37. Remove the front floor footrest. Remove the right and left front door scuff plates. Remove the right and left cowl side trim boards.
  38.  
  39. Separate the right and left front door opening trim weatherstrips. Remove the right and left front pillar garnish.
  40.  
  41. Disengage the four clips and two claws and remove the instrument panel under tray.
  42.  
  43. Disengage the four clips and remove the instrument panel access hole cover
  44.  
  45. If equipped with automatic transmission, remove the shift knob. Disengage the six clips and one claw. Remove the console upper rear panel subassembly.
  46.  
  47. If equipped with manual transmission, disengage the four clips and one claw. Remove the console upper rear panel subassembly.
  48.  
  49. Remove the console box carpet. Remove the two screws. Disengage the four claws and remove the rear console box assembly.
  50.  
  51. If equipped with automatic transmission, disengage the four claws and two clips and remove the instrument panel cup holder tray. Remove the two screws. Disengage the two clips and one claw and remove the front console box.
  52.  
  53. If equipped with manual transmission, remove the shift lever knob. Remove the two screws. Disengage the claw and two clips. Remove the front console box.
  54.  
  55. If the vehicle is equipped with a bench seat, remove the shift knob. Remove the box bottom mat. Remove the instrument panel cup holder. Remove the number two box bottom mat. Remove the clip and two bolts. Disengage the claw and two clips and remove the front console box.

  57. Disengage the four clips and remove the air conditioning control assembly. Disconnect the two electrical connectors.

  59. Remove the radio.
  60.  
  61. Separate the hood lock control lever subassembly.
  62.  
  63. Remove the two bolts. Disengage the three clips and remove the lower number one instrument panel finish panel. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  64.  
  65. Remove the two clips. Disengage the six clips and remove the instrument cluster finish panel sub assembly. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  66.  
  67. Remove the four screws and the combination meter assembly. Disconnect the two electrical connectors.
  68.  
  69. Disengage the ten clips and remove the instrument cluster center finish panel subassembly.
  70.  
  71. Disengage the claw and separate the glove box door stopper from the glove box door assembly.
  72.  
  73. Slightly deform the upper part of the glove box door assembly and release the two stoppers and open the door assembly until it becomes horizontal.
  74.  
  75. Pull the glove box door assembly toward the rear of the vehicle and release the two stoppers and open the glove box door until it becomes horizontal.
  76.  
  77. Pull the glove box door assembly toward the rear of the vehicle to release the three hinges and remove the door assembly.
  78.  
  79. Remove the bolt. Disengage the two clips and remove the instrument panel lower finish panel subassembly, right side.
  80.  
  81. Remove the three bolts and the lower instrument panel, left side.
  82.  
  83. Remove the bolt. Disengage the five clips and remove the instrument lower cover subassembly. Disconnect the two connectors.
  84.  
  85. Disengage the three claws and remove the instrument side panel, right side.
  86.  
  87. Disconnect the passenger-s side air bag connector. Disengage the ten hooks and remove the front passenger side air bag. Release the front side wall of the air bag door from the other hook and remove the front passenger side air bag assembly.
  88.  
  89. Tape up the steering column cover and upper steering wheel subassembly using protective tape. Disengage the four clamps and disconnect the four connectors. Remove the eight bolts, nut and instrument subassembly.
  90.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. When installing the spiral cable, check that the ignition switch is in the -OFF- position. Turn the cable counterclockwise by hand until it becomes hard to turn. Turn the cable clockwise about 2½ turns to align the marks.
    NOTE
    The cable will rotate about 2½ turns both left and right from the center.
