  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies.
  6.  
  7. On 4WD and PreRunner, remove the spare tire.
  8.  
  9. Support the rear axle housing. Remove the bolt nut and washer.
  10.  
  11. On 2WD separate the chock absorber from the rear spring seat.
  12.  
  13. On 4WD and PreRunner, separate the shock absorber from the rear axle housing.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bolt and then separate the parking brake cable.
  16.  
  17. On 2WD remove the two nuts and spring bumper. Remove the four nuts and four washers. Remove the spring seat and two U-bolts.
  18.  
  19. On 4WD and PreRunner, remove the four nuts and four washers. Remove the spring seat and two U-bolts. Remove the spring bumper.
  20.  
  21. Remove the nut, washer and through bolt. Remove the spring from the vehicle.
    NOTE
    Be careful not to drop the spring when removing the through bolt.

To install:


NOTE
Always fully tighten rubber bushings when the wheels are in full contact with the ground and the vehicle is at curb height. Bounce the vehicle up and down several times to stabilize the suspension, prior to final tightening of these components.

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the rear spring U-bolts to 37 ft. lbs. Be sure that the lengths of all of the U-bolts under the spring seat are the same.

2wd
  1. Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts.
  2.  
  3. Raise the rear of the vehicle. Support the frame and rear axle housing with stands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lug nuts and the wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cotter pin, nut, and washer from the lower end of the shock absorber.
  8.  
  9. Detach the shock absorber from the spring seat.
  10.  
  11. Remove the parking brake cable clamp.

NOTE
Remove the parking brake equalizer, if necessary.

  1. Unfasten the U-bolt nuts and remove the spring seat assemblies.
  2.  
  3. Adjust the height of the rear axle housing so that the weight of the rear axle is removed from the rear springs.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the spring shackle retaining nuts. Withdraw the spring shackle inner plate. Carefully pry out the spring shackle with a bar.
  6.  
  7. Remove the spring bracket pin from the front end of the spring hanger and remove the rubber bushing.
  8.  
  9. Remove the spring. Use care not to damage the hydraulic brake line or the parking brake cable.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the rubber bushing in the eye of the spring.
  2.  
  3. Align the eye of the spring with the spring hanger bracket and drive the pin through the bracket holes and rubber bushings.
  4.  


NOTE
Use soapy water or glass cleaner as a lubricant, if necessary, to aid in pin installation. Never use oil or grease.

  1. Finger-tighten the spring hanger nuts and/or bolts.
  2.  
  3. Install the rubber bushing in the spring eye at the opposite end of the spring.
  4.  
  5. Raise the free end of the spring. Install the spring shackle through the bushing and the bracket.
  6.  
  7. Install the shackle inner plate and finger-tighten the retaining nuts.
  8.  
  9. Center the bolt head in the hole which is provided in the spring seat on the axle housing.
  10.  
  11. Fit the U-bolts over the axle housing. Install the lower spring seat.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the U-bolt nuts to 90 ft. lbs. (120 Nm)
  14.  
  15. Install the parking brake cable and clamp. Install the equalizer, if removed.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the hanger pin and shackle nuts. Install the shock absorber bushings and washers. Tighten and install the cotter pins.
  18.  
  19. Install the stabilizer link and hand-tighten its retaining nuts.
  20.  
  21. Install the wheels. Lower the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Bounce the truck several times to set the suspension and then tighten the shock absorber bolt. Tighten the hanger pin nut or bolt to 115 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Tighten the shackle pin to 67 ft. lbs. (91 Nm).
  26.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  5. Raise the rear of the vehicle. Support the frame and rear axle housing with stands.

  7. Remove the lug nuts and the wheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the cotter pin, nut, and washer from the lower end of the shock absorber.
  10.  
  11. Detach the shock absorber from the spring seat.
  12.  
  13. Remove the parking brake cable clamp.
    NOTE
    Remove the parking brake equalizer, if necessary.

  14.  
  15. Unfasten the U-bolt nuts and remove the spring seat assemblies.
  16.  
  17. Adjust the height of the rear axle housing so that the weight of the rear axle is removed from the rear springs.
  18.  
  19. Unfasten the spring shackle retaining nuts. Withdraw the spring shackle inner plate. Carefully pry out the spring shackle with a bar.
  20.  
  21. Remove the spring bracket pin from the front end of the spring hanger and remove the rubber bushing.
  22.  
  23. Remove the spring. Use care not to damage the hydraulic brake line or the parking brake cable.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Install the rubber bushing in the eye of the spring.
  2.  
  3. Align the eye of the spring with the spring hanger bracket and drive the pin through the bracket holes and rubber bushings.
    NOTE
    Use soapy water or glass cleaner as a lubricant, if necessary, to aid in pin installation. Never use oil or grease.

  4.  
  5. Finger-tighten the spring hanger nuts and/or bolts.
  6.  
  7. Install the rubber bushing in the spring eye at the opposite end of the spring.
  8.  
  9. Raise the free end of the spring. Install the spring shackle through the bushing and the bracket.
  10.  
  11. Install the shackle inner plate and finger-tighten the retaining nuts.
  12.  
  13. Center the bolt head in the hole which is provided in the spring seat on the axle housing.
  14.  
  15. Fit the U-bolts over the axle housing. Install the lower spring seat.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the U-bolt nuts to 90 ft. lbs. (120 Nm)
  18.  
  19. Install the parking brake cable and clamp. Install the equalizer, if removed.
  20.  
  21. Tighten the hanger pin and shackle nuts. Install the shock absorber bushings and washers. Tighten and install the cotter pins.
  22.  
  23. Install the stabilizer link and hand-tighten its retaining nuts.
  24.  
  25. Install the wheels. Lower the vehicle.
  26.  
  27. Bounce the truck several times to set the suspension and then tighten the shock absorber bolt. Tighten the hanger pin nut or bolt to 115 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Tighten the shackle pin to 67 ft. lbs. (91 Nm).
  30.  

4wd
  1. Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts.
  2.  
  3. Raise the rear of the vehicle. Support the frame and rear axle housing with stands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lug nuts and the wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cotter pin, nut and washer from the lower end of the shock absorber.
  8.  
  9. Detach the shock absorber from the spring seat.
  10.  
  11. Remove the parking brake cable clamp.
  12.  


NOTE
Remove the parking brake equalizer, if necessary.

  1. Unfasten the U-bolt and nuts, then remove the spring seat assemblies.

  23. Bounce the truck several times to set the suspension and then tighten the shock absorber bolt. Tighten the hanger pin nut or bolt to 115 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).

  25. Tighten the shackle pin to 67 ft. lbs. (91 Nm).
