Shock Absorbers

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Lower the floor jack to take tension off of the spring.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Shock absorber from the rear axle housing
     
    Nut, retainers and the cushions holding the shock absorber to the frame
     
    Shock absorber with the washers and bushings

To install:

  1. Install the shock absorber to the frame with the washers and bushings.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the shock absorber-to-frame nut to the following values:

    2WD: 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    4WD and PreRunner: 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm)
     

  4.  
  5. Connect the shock absorber to the rear axle housing. Tighten the bolt to the following specifications:

    2WD: 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    4WD and PreRunner: 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm)
     

  6.  
  7. Install the wheels.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Lower the floor jack to take tension off of the spring.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Shock absorber from the rear axle housing
     
    Nut, retainers and the cushions holding the shock absorber to the frame
     
    Shock absorber with the washers and bushings

To install:


NOTE
Always fully tighten rubber bushings when the wheels are in full contact with the ground and the vehicle is at curb height. Bounce the vehicle up and down several times to stabilize the suspension, prior to final tightening of these components.

  1. Install the shock absorber to the frame with the washers and bushings.
  2.  
  3. On 2001-2004 vehicles tighten the shock absorber-to-frame nut on 2WD to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) and on 4WD and PreRunner to 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm).
  4.  
  5. On 2005-2006 vehicles tighten the shock absorber-to-upper frame nut on to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the shock absorber to the rear axle housing.
  8.  
  9. On 2001-2004 vehicles tighten the bolt on 2WD to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) and on 4WD and PreRunner to 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm).
  10.  
  11. On 2005-2006 vehicles tighten the bolt to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the wheels.
