Relieving Fuel System Pressure

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  4.  
  5. Place a catch-pan under the joint to be disconnected. A large quantity of fuel may be released when the joint is opened.
  6.  
  7. Wear eye or full face protection.
  8.  
  9. Place a shop towel over the area and slowly loosen the joint using a wrench of the correct size. Use a back-up wrench if needed.
  10.  
  11. Allow the fuel left in the line to bleed off slowly before fully disconnecting the joint.
  12.  
  13. Plug the opened lines immediately to prevent fuel spillage or the entry of dirt.
  14.  
  15. Dispose of the released fuel properly.
  16.  
  17. After connecting fuel lines, connect the negative battery cable and start the engine.
  18.  
  19. Check for leaks and repair as needed.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine relay block cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the circuit opening relay.

  9. Connect the negative battery.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine.
  12.  
  13. Turn the ignition switch -ON- after the engine stops.
    NOTE
    Code DTC P0171 (system lean) may be present.

  15. Crank the engine again. Check that the engine stops.
  16.  
  17. Remove the fuel tank cap and completely discharge the pressure in the fuel tank. Install the circuit opening relay.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
