REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Valve spring removal and installation is part of the Valves removal and installation procedure covered earlier in this section.

INSPECTION

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

Valve spring squareness, free length and tension should be checked while the valve train is disassembled. Place each valve spring on a flat surface next to a steel square. Rotate it against the edge of the square to check for distortion. If the squareness is not within 0.079 in. (2mm), replace the spring. Check the free length of the spring with a pair of vernier calipers. It should be 1.756 in. (44.6mm) on 3A and 3A-C engines and 1.6346 in. (41.52mm) on 3E and 3E-E engines. If the free length of the spring is not within specification, replace the spring. Using a spring tester, measure the tension of the valve spring at the specified installed length. Compare the readings with the Valve Specifications Chart. If it is not within specification, replace the spring.
