REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTION
On models equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) or "air bag,'' work must NOT be started until at least 90 seconds have passed from the time that both the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position and the negative cable is disconnected from the battery.


CAUTION
The suspension on any vehicle is assembled with high grade, hardened fasteners. NEVER substitute a fastener of inferior load rating when assembling a suspension component!

Wagons and 1984-86 Sedans
  1. Remove the steering knuckle. Refer to the procedures in this section.
  2.  
  3. Using a small prybar, remove the dust deflector.
  4.

  1. Using SST 09308-00010 or its equivalent, remove the inner oil seal from the steering knuckle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the hole snapring using a pair of snapring pliers.

  1. Remove the disc brake dust cover.
  2.  
  3. Using SST 09950-20016 or its equivalent, remove the axle hub from the steering knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the inside bearing inner race.
  6.  
  7. Using SST 09950-20016 or its equivalent, remove the outside bearing inner race.
  8.

  1. Using SST 09308-00010 or its equivalent, remove the outer oil seal.
  2.  
  3. Place the inner race of the outside bearing in the bearing. Using SST 09228-22020 and 09950-20016, press out the bearing.

To install:
  1. Using SST 09309-35010 or its equivalent, press in a new bearing. Note that there are two types of bearings, KOYO and NSK. Identify the original bearing and replace it with the same type.

  1. Install the outside bearing inner race. Using a seal driver, install a new outer oil seal into the steering knuckle. Apply multi-purpose grease to the seal lip.
  2.  
  3. Install the disc brake dust cover to the knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Install new inner races into the inner bearing. Using SST 09228-22020 and 09310-35010 or their equivalent, press in the inner race until it is tightly against the shoulder of the hub. Be sure not to switch the inner and outer races when installing.
  6.  
  7. Install the hole snapring. Using a seal driver, install the inner oil seal to a depth of 0.130 in. (3.3mm) from the end of the surface.
  8.  
  9. Drive in a new dust seal into the steering knuckle. Install the knuckle assembly to the vehicle.
  10.  

1987-90 Sedans
  1. Remove the steering knuckle. Refer to the procedures in this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the ball joint, refer to the procedures in this section.
  4.  
  5. Using a small prybar, remove the inner oil seal from the steering knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the hole snapring using a pair of snapring pliers.
  8.  
  9. Remove the disc brake dust cover.
  10.  
  11. Using SST 09950-20017 or its equivalent, remove the axle hub from the steering knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the inside bearing inner race.
  14.  
  15. Using SST 09950-20017 or its equivalent, remove the outside bearing inner race.
  16.  
  17. Remove the outer oil seal using a small prybar.
  18.  
  19. Place the inner race of the outside bearing in the bearing. Using a brass drift and hammer, drive out the bearing.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Using SST 09316-60010 or its equivalent, press in a new bearing.
  2.  
  3. Install the outside bearing inner race. Using a seal driver, install a new outer oil seal into the steering knuckle. Apply multi-purpose grease to the seal lip.
  4.  
  5. Install the disc brake dust cover to the knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Install a new inner race to the inside bearing. Using SST 09310-35010 or its equivalent, install the axle hub onto the knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Install the hole snapring. Using a seal driver, install the inner oil seal.
  10.  
  11. Install the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Install the knuckle assembly to the vehicle.
  12.  

1991-94 Sedans
  1. Remove the steering knuckle. Refer to the procedures in this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the ball joint, refer to the procedures in this section.
  4.  
  5. Using a small prybar, remove the inner oil seal from the steering knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Using SST 09950-20017 or its equivalent, remove the axle hub from the steering knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the disc brake dust cover.
  10.  
  11. Using SST 09950-20017 or its equivalent, remove the outside bearing inner race.
  12.  
  13. Remove the outer oil seal using a small prybar.
  14.  
  15. Remove the hole snapring using a pair of snapring pliers.
  16.  
  17. Place the inner race of the outside bearing in the bearing. Using a brass drift and hammer, drive out the bearing.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Using SST 09608-10010 or its equivalent, press in a new bearing. If the inner race and balls come loose from the outer race, be sure to install them on the same side as before.
  2.  
  3. Install the hole snapring. Using a seal driver, install the outer oil seal.
  4.  
  5. Install the disc brake dust cover to the knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Using SST 09608-10010, 09950-20017 or their equivalent, install the axle hub onto the knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Install the lower ball joint.
  10.  
  11. Using a seal driver, install a new inner oil seal into the steering knuckle. Apply multi-purpose grease to the seal lip.
  12.  
  13. Install the knuckle assembly to the vehicle.
  14.
