Toyota Tercel 1984-1994 Repair Guide

See Figure 1

On models equipped with an air bag (SRS), work must NOT be started until at least 90 seconds have passed from the time that both the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position and the negative cable is disconnected from the battery.

The consoles are usually removed by loosening the mounting screws and disengaging the retaining clips. Many of these screws are concealed by plastic covers which may be popped off with a small screwdriver or similar tool. The consoles can be lifted over the shifter handle and removed from the car. Be very careful not to lose any small parts between the floor pan and carpet while the console is out.

Once the console is removed, take an extra moment to clean it thoroughly and apply a vinyl protectant. You can now get all the crevices that have been blocked by the seats and hidden by the carpet. When the console is reinstalled, make sure that any wires in the area are not pinched by the console or pierced by the mounting screws.
