Transmission Removal & Installation

3.4L Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Throttle cable
     
    Transmission dipstick
     
    Oil filler tube and discard the O-ring
     

  4.  
  5. Shift the transfer case intoH4
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transfer case shift lever knob
     
    No. 1 engine under cover
     
    Front and center exhaust pipes
     
    Driveshaft(s)
     
    No. 1 and 2 Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) connectors
     
    Shift control cable
     
    Oil cooler pipe
     
    Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) sensor connector
     
    Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch
     
    Rear endplate
     
    Torque converter bolts
     
    Crossmember
     
    Engine rear mounting insulator
     
    Starter
     
    Transmission
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission. Torque the bolts to 53 ft. lbs. (71 Nm).
     
    Starter. Torque the bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
     
    Engine rear mounting insulator. Torque the bolts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
     
    Crossmember. Torque the nuts to 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm) and the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm)..
     
    Torque converter. Torque the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
     
    Rear endplate. Torque the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch
     
    Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) sensor connector
     
    Oil cooler pipe. Torque the bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
     
    Shift control cable. Torque the bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
     
    No. 1 and 2 Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) connectors
     
    Driveshaft(s)
     
    Front and center exhaust pipes
     
    No. 1 engine under cover
     
    Transfer case shift lever knob
     
    Oil filler tube using a new O-ring
     
    Transmission dipstick
     
    Throttle cable
     
    Negative battery cable

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Throttle cable
     
    Transmission dipstick
     
    Oil filler tube and discard the O-ring

  5. Shift the transfer case into H4 position.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transfer case shift lever knob
     
    No. 1 engine under cover
     
    Front and center exhaust pipes
     
    Driveshaft(s)
     
    No. 1 and 2 Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) connectors
     
    Shift control cable
     
    Oil cooler pipe
     
    Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) sensor connector
     
    Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch
     
    Rear endplate
     
    Torque converter bolts
     
    Crossmember
     
    Engine rear mounting insulator
     
    Starter
     
    Transmission
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission. Torque the bolts to 53 ft. lbs. (71 Nm).
     
    Starter. Torque the bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
     
    Engine rear mounting insulator. Torque the bolts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
     
    Crossmember. Torque the nuts to 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm) and the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm)..
     
    Torque converter. Torque the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
     
    Rear endplate. Torque the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch
     
    Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) sensor connector
     
    Oil cooler pipe. Torque the bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
     
    Shift control cable. Torque the bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
     
    No. 1 and 2 Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) connectors
     
    Driveshaft(s)
     
    Front and center exhaust pipes
     
    No. 1 engine under cover
     
    Transfer case shift lever knob
     
    Oil filler tube using a new O-ring
     
    Transmission dipstick
     
    Throttle cable
     
    Negative battery cable

4.0L & 4.7L Engines



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine number one under cover assembly. Drain the transmission fluid.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front exhaust pipe assembly.
  10.  
  11. Matchmark and remove the driveshaft assembly.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the NT and SP2 speed sensor connectors.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the transmission wire connector. Disconnect the neutral safety switch connector.
  16.  
  17. Remove the nut and disconnect the shift control cable. Remove the two bolts and the shift control cable bracket from the transmission.
  18.  
  19. Remove the bolts and clamps retaining the fluid cooler lines. Using tool SST09023-12701 or equivalent, disconnect and plug the lines.
  20.  
  21. Remove the two bolts, nuts and stabilizer bar bushings and brackets. Disconnect the stabilizer bar.
  22.  
  23. On 4.0L engine, remove the starter.
  24.  
  25. On 4.0L engine, remove the flywheel housing side cover. On 4.7L engine remove the rear end plate cover.
  26.  
  27. Remove the torque converter retaining bolts.
  28.  
  29. Properly support the transmission assembly, using the proper transmission jack.
  30.  
  31. Remove the four set bolts of the engine rear mounting on the crossmember. Remove the four nuts, washers, bolts and crossmember.
  32.  
  33. Remove the number one engine rear mounting insulator bolts and the engine rear mounting insulator.
  34.  
  35. Disconnect the wiring harness from the transmission.
  36.  
  37. Lower the rear end of the transmission. Remove the nine transmission retaining bolts. Separate and remove the transmission from the engine.
  38.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. When installing the torque converter on to the transmission housing, use a calipers and straight edge and measure between the transmission and the end of the surface of the driveplate.
  4.  
  5. Use a calipers and straight edge and measure the dimension -B- shown in the illustration and check that -B- is greater than -A-. Specification should be 0.04 inch or more.

  7. Tighten the 17mm head transmission to engine retaining bolts to 52 ft. lbs. and the 14mm head bolts to 27 ft. lbs.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the torque converter to flexplate retaining bolts to 35 ft. lbs.
    NOTE
    Install the green colored bolt first, then the remaining five bolts.

  11. Be sure to fill the transmission with the proper grade and type fluid.
    NOTE
    On 2005-2006 vehicles equipped with the A750E and A750F automatic transmissions, initialization is performed using the intelligent tester tool. Perform the automatic transmission initialization procedure when replacing the automatic transmission, engine or ECM.

  13. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  14.  
  15. Connect the intelligent tester tool to the DLC3.
  16.  
  17. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
  18.  
  19. Push the intelligent tester tool main switch to the ON position.
  20.  
  21. Select the items, DIAGNOSIS/ENHANCED OBD II.
  22.  
  23. Perform the reset memory procedure from the ENGINE menu.
    NOTE
    After performing the reset memory, be sure to perform the road test procedure. For roadtest procedure information, refer to the intelligent tester instruction manual.

  25. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  26.  
  27. Roadtest the vehicle.
  28.  

4.7L Engine



  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission. Tighten the flange bolts to 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm).
     
    Transmission mount crossmember. Tighten the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) and the nuts to 54 ft. lbs. (74 Nm).
     
    Transmission oil cooler lines
     
    Torque converter. Tighten the bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
     
    Motor actuator connector
     
    L4 solenoid valve position switch connector
     
    Center differential lock indicator switch connector
     
    PNP switch connector
     
    Transmission fluid temperature sensor connector
     
    Solenoid harness connector
     
    Overdrive clutch speed sensor connector
     
    VSS sensor connectors
     
    Front driveshaft. Tighten the fasteners to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
     
    Rear driveshaft. Tighten the fasteners to 78 ft. lbs. (106 Nm).
     
    Exhaust front pipes
     
    Engine under covers
     
    Transfer case shift lever and rod
     
    Transmission gear select lever and rod
     
    Center console
     
    Transmission dipstick tube
     
    Coolant recovery reservoir
     
    Cooling fan and shroud
     
    Air intake assembly
     
    Battery and tray
     

  2.  
  3. Check the transmission and transfer case fluid levels and adjust as necessary.
