Removal & Installation



3.4L Engine
  1. Clean all surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Install the valve lifters and shims. Check that the valve lifter rotates smoothly by hand.
  4.  
  5. Install the right intake camshaft, as follows:
    1. Apply engine oil to the thrust portion of the intake camshaft.
    2.  
    3. Position the intake camshaft at 90 degrees angle of the timing mark (2 dot marks) on the cylinder head.
    4.  
    5. Install the bearing caps in their proper locations. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the threads and install the cap bolts.
    6.  
    7. Apply a light coat of engine oil on the threads and under the heads of the bearing cap bolts.
    8.  
    9. Uniformly tighten the cap bolts in the sequence shown to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).
    10.

  7. Install the right exhaust camshaft, as follows:
    1. Apply engine oil to the thrust portion of the intake camshaft.
    2.  
    3. Align the timing marks (2 dot marks) of the camshaft drive and driven gears.
    4.  
    5. Roll down the exhaust camshaft onto the bearing journals while engaging the gears with each other. Install the bearing caps in their proper locations.
    6.  
    7. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the threads and install the cap bolts.
    8.  
    9. Apply a light coat of engine oil on the threads and under the heads of the bearing cap bolts.
    10.  
    11. Uniformly tighten the cap bolts in the sequence shown to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).
    12.  
    13. Remove the service bolt from the driven sub-gear. Check that the intake and exhaust camshafts turns smoothly.
    14.  
    15. Align the timing marks (2 dot marks) of the camshaft drive and driven gears by turning the camshaft with a wrench.
    16.

  9. Install the left intake camshaft, as follows:
    1. Apply engine oil to the thrust portion of the intake camshaft.
    2.  
    3. Position the intake camshaft at 90 degrees angle of the timing mark (1 dot mark) on the cylinder head.
    4.  
    5. Install the bearing caps in their proper locations. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the threads and install the cap bolts.
    6.  
    7. Apply a light coat of engine oil on the threads and under the heads of the bearing cap bolts.
    8.  
    9. Uniformly tighten the cap bolts in the sequence shown to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).
    10.

  11. Install the left exhaust camshaft, as follows:
    1. Apply engine oil to the thrust portion of the intake camshaft.
    2.  
    3. Align the timing marks (1 dot mark) of the camshaft drive and driven gears.
    4.  
    5. Roll down the exhaust camshaft onto the bearing journals while engaging the gears with each other. Install the bearing caps in their proper locations.
    6.  
    7. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the threads and install the cap bolts.
    8.  
    9. Apply a light coat of engine oil on the threads and under the heads of the bearing cap bolts.
    10.  
    11. Uniformly tighten the cap bolts in the sequence shown to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).
    12.  
    13. Remove the service bolt.
    14.

  13. Check and adjust the valve clearance.
  14.  
  15. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Check that the pulley bracket moves smoothly.



    Semi-circular plugs
     
    Cylinder head covers. Tighten the bolts, in several passes, to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
     
    Alternator bracket. Tighten the bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    No. 3 timing belt cover. Tighten the 6 bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
     
    CMP sensor. Tighten it to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Intake air connector
     
    Hoses
     
    Alternator but do not tighten the bolts and nuts at this time
     
    No. 2 timing belt idler. Tighten the bolt to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).

  17. Install the left camshaft timing pulley, as follows:
    1. Install the knock pin to the camshaft.
    2.  
    3. Align the knock pin hose of the camshaft with the knock pin groove of the timing pulley.
    4.  
    5. Slide the timing pulley on the camshaft with the flange side facing outward. Tighten the pulley bolt to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
    6.

  19. Set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC of the compression stroke.
    1. Turn the crankshaft pulley and align its groove with the timing mark 0 on the No. 1 timing belt cover.
    2.  
    3. Turn the camshaft, align the knock pin hole of the camshaft with the timing mark of the No. 3 timing belt cover.
    4.  
    5. Turn the camshaft timing pulley, align the timing marks of the camshaft timing pulley and the No. 3 timing belt cover.
    6.

  21. Connect the timing belt to the left camshaft timing pulley, as follows:
    1. Check that the installation mark on the timing belt is aligned with the end of the No. 1 timing belt cover.
    2.  
    3. Using Variable Pin Wrench Set 09960-01000 or equivalent, slightly turn the left camshaft timing pulley clockwise. Align the installation mark on the timing belt with the timing mark of the camshaft timing pulley, and hang the timing belt on the left camshaft timing pulley.
    4.  
    5. Align the timing marks of the left camshaft pulley and the No. 3 timing belt cover.
    6.  
    7. Check that the timing belt has tension between the crankshaft timing pulley and the left camshaft timing pulley.
    8.

  23. Install the right camshaft timing pulley and the timing belt, as follows:
    1. Align the installation mark on the timing belt with the timing mark of the right camshaft timing pulley, and hang the timing belt on the right camshaft timing pulley with the flange side facing inward.
    2.  
    3. Slide the right camshaft timing pulley on the camshaft. Align the timing marks on the right camshaft timing pulley and the No. 3 timing belt cover.
    4.  
    5. Align the knock pin hole of the camshaft with the knock pin groove of the pulley.
    6.  
    7. Install the knock pin. Tighten the bolt to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
    8.

  25. Set the timing belt tensioner, as follows:
    1. Using a press, slowly press in the pushrod using 220-2,205 lbs. (981-9,807 N) of force.
    2.  
    3. Align the holes of the pushrod and housing, pass a 1.5mm hexagon wrench through the holes to keep the setting position of the pushrod.
    4.  
    5. Release the press and install the dust boot to the tensioner.
    6.

  27. Install the timing belt tensioner and alternately tighten the bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (28 Nm). Using pliers, remove the 1.5mm hexagon wrench from the belt tensioner.
  28.  
  29. Check the valve timing, as follows:
    1. Slowly turn the crankshaft pulley 2 revolutions from the TDC-to-TDC. Always turn the crankshaft pulley clockwise.
    2.  
    3. Check that each pulley aligns with the timing marks. If the timing marks do not align, remove the timing belt and reinstall it.
    4.

  31. Install or connect the following:

    Fan bracket with the bolt and nut
     
    Power steering adjusting strut with the nut
     
    No. 2 timing belt cover. Tighten the bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  32.  
  33. Fill the radiator with engine coolant.
  34.  
  35. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  36.  
  37. Check the ignition timing.
  38.  
  39. Install the engine undercover.
  40.  
  41. Road test the vehicle.
  42.  
  43. Recheck all fluid levels.

4.7L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine under covers
     
    Engine appearance cover
     
    Air intake hose
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Cooling fan
     
    Radiator
     
    Idler pulley
     
    Upper and middle timing belt covers
     
    A/C compressor
     
    Cooling fan bracket
     
    Alternator
     
    Accessory drive belt tensioner
     

  8.  
  9. Set the engine to Top Dead Center (TDC) with the camshaft sprocket timing marks aligned with the rear cover timing marks.
  10.  
  11. Rotate the crankshaft to 50 degrees After TDC as shown. The crankshaft pulley timing mark should align with the center of the No. 2 idler pulley bolt.
  12.  
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Lower timing cover
     
    Timing belt. Refer to the Timing Belt unit repair section.
     
    Camshaft timing sprockets
     
    Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor
     
    Ignition coils
     
    Valve cover
     
    Timing belt rear covers
     

  14.  
  15. Rotate the right bank camshafts as necessary to access the exhaust camshaft sub-gear service bolt hole and install a 6mm x 1.0mm bolt.

NOTE
Keep all valvetrain components in order for assembly.

  1. Align the right bank camshaft 1 dot timing marks to a10
  2.  
  3. Loosen the bearing cap bolts in sequence and in several passes.
  4.  
  5. Remove the right bank camshafts.
  6.  
  7. Rotate the left bank camshafts as necessary to access the exhaust camshaft sub-gear service bolt hole and install a 6mm x 1.0mm bolt.
  8.  
  9. Align the left bank camshaft 2 dot timing marks as shown.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the bearing cap bolts in sequence and in several passes.
  12.  
  13. Remove the left bank camshafts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the valve lifters and shims.
  16.

To install:

  1. Ensure that the crankshaft is at 50 degrees After TDC.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Valve lifters and shims in their original positions
     
    Right bank camshafts with the 1 dot timing marks at 10 degrees
     
    Left bank camshafts with the 2 dot timing marks aligned
     
    Left and right bank camshaft bearing caps in their original positions. Apply sealant to the front bearing caps as shown.
     
    Camshaft oil seals
     

  4.  
  5. The bearing cap bolts vary in length and are identified as follows:

    A: 3.70 inches (94mm)
     
    B: 2.83 inches (72mm)
     
    C: 0.98 inches (25mm)
     
    D: 2.05 inches (52mm)
     
    E: 1.50 inches (38mm)
     

  6.  
  7. Bolts in positionsABC

  9. Lubricate the threads and under the contact flange for bolts in positionsDE
  10.  
  11. Install oil feed pipes and the bearing cap bolts according to position in the illustrations.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the camshaft bearing bolts in sequence and in several passes to the following specifications:

    Bolt C: 66 inch lbs. (7.5 Nm)
     
    All others: 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm)
     

  14.  
  15. Remove the service bolts from the exhaust camshaft gears.
  16.  
  17. Install or connect the following:

    Timing belt rear covers
     
    Valve cover
     
    Ignition coils
     
    CMP sensor
     
    Camshaft timing sprockets. Tighten the bolts to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
     
    Timing belt
     
    Lower timing cover
     
    Crankshaft pulley. Tighten the bolt to 181 ft. lbs. (245 Nm).
     
    Accessory drive belt tensioner
     
    Alternator
     
    Cooling fan bracket
     
    A/C compressor
     
    Upper and middle timing belt covers
     
    Idler pulley. Tighten the bolt to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
     
    Radiator
     
    Cooling fan
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Air intake hose
     
    Engine appearance cover
     
    Engine under covers
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  18.  
  19. Fill the cooling system.
  20.  
  21. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  22.
