Removal & Installation



3.4L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine undercover
     
    Front differential, if equipped with 4WD
     
    Oil pan, separate it from the engine using SST 09032-00100 and a brass bar
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Apply seal packing to the oil pan.
  2.  
  3. Install the oil pan to the cylinder block. Tighten the nuts and bolts to: 67 inch lbs. (8 Nm)
  4.  


WARNING
If parts are not assembled within 5 minutes of applying time, the effectiveness of the seal packing is lost and must be removed and reapplied.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Front differential, if removed
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Fill with engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine undercover
     
    Front differential, if equipped with 4WD
     
    Oil pan, separate it from the engine using SST 09032-00100 and a brass bar

To install:

  1. Apply seal packing to the oil pan.
  2.  
  3. Install the oil pan to the cylinder block. Tighten the nuts and bolts to: 67 inch lbs. (8 Nm)
    WARNING

  5. Install or connect the following:

    Front differential, if removed
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Negative battery cable

  7. Fill with engine oil.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  10.  

4.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine undercover. Drain the engine oil.
  8.  
  9. Remove the necessary components in order to gain access to the lower oil pan retaining bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the fifteen bolts and two nuts that retain the oil pan to the engine. Insert the blade of tool SST09032-00100 between the pans. Cut through the sealer and remove the lower oil pan from the engine.
    NOTE
    Be careful not to damage the contact surface of the oil pans.

  13. Remove the two bolts and nuts. Remove the oil strainer. Discard the gasket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the four housing bolts. Remove the flywheel housing undercover.
  16.  
  17. To remove the upper oil pan, remove the seventeen bolts and two nuts. Remove the upper oil pan from the engine, by prying it apart using a suitable tool.
    NOTE
    Be careful not to damage the sealing surface between the upper oil pan and the cylinder block.

To install:

  1. Apply a continuous bead (0.12-0.16 inch in diameter) of seal packing, part number 08826-00080 or equivalent, to the sealing surface of the oil pan.
    NOTE
    Remove any oil from the contact surface. Install the upper oil pan within three minutes of applying the seal packing. Tighten the pan bolts to specification within fifteen minutes after applying the seal packing. Do not start the engine for at least two hours after the installation of the oil pan.

  3. Loosely install the upper oil pan bolts and nuts. Bolt -A- is 0.98 inch long, bolt -B- is 1.77 inch long and bolt -C- is 0.55 inch long. Uniformly tighten the 14mm bolt to 7.0 ft. lbs, and the other bolts and nuts to 17 ft. lbs., in the proper sequence.

  5. Install the oil strainer assembly. Torque the bolts to 80 inch lbs.
  6.  
  7. Apply a continuous bead (0.12-0.16 inch in diameter) of seal packing, part number 08826-00080 or equivalent, to the sealing surface of the oil pan.
    NOTE
    Remove any oil from the contact surface. Install the lower oil pan within three minutes of applying the seal packing. Tighten the pan bolts to specification within fifteen minutes after applying the seal packing. Do not start the engine for at least two hours after the installation of the oil pan.

  9. Loosely install the lower oil pan bolts and nuts. Uniformly tighten the bolts to 80 inch lbs, and the nuts to 7.0 ft. lbs., in several steps.
  10.  
  11. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  12.  
  13. Be sure to fill the engine with the proper grade and type engine coolant.
  14.  
  15. Be sure to fill the engine with the proper grade and type engine oil.
  16.  
  17. Start the engine and check for leaks. Correct as required.
  18.  

4.7L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine from the vehicle and mount it on a stand.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Oil dipstick tube
     
    Lower oil pan
     
    Oil pan baffle
     
    Upper oil pan

  1. The upper oil pan bolts are different lengths and are identified as follows:

    A: 0.79 inch (20mm) w/10mm head
     
    B: 0.98 inch (25mm) w/12mm head
     
    C: 2.36 inch (60mm) w/12mm head
     
    D: 1.38 inch (35mm) w/10mm head
     

  2.  
  3. Apply silicone sealant to the upper oil pan as shown.
  4.  
  5. Install the upper oil pan and tighten the fasteners in several passes to the following specifications:

    10mm: 66 inch lbs. (7.5 Nm)
     
    12mm: 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm)
     

  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan baffle. Tighten the fasteners to 66 inch lbs. (7.5 Nm).
     
    Lower oil pan. Tighten the fasteners in several passes to 66 inch lbs. (7.5 Nm).
     
    Oil dipstick tube
     

  8.  
  9. Install the engine.
