Pinion Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the under cover.
  4.  
  5. Drain the differential housing oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front driveshaft.
  8.  
  9. Remove the companion flange, as follows:

    Loosen the staked part of the nut, using a chisel and a hammer
     
    Companion flange nut, using tool 09330-00021
     
    Companion flange, using tools 09950-30011 and 09954-03010
     

  10.  
  11. Remove the oil seal and slinger, as follows:

    Oil seal, using tool 09308-10010
     
    Oil slinger

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil slinger
     
    New oil seal, using a hammer and tool 09554-22010 to a depth of 0.153-0.189 in. (4.2-4.8mm).

  3. Install the companion flange, as follows:

    Companion flange
     
    New nut, lubricated with hypoid gear oil
     
    Torque the nut to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm), using tool 09330-00021.

  5. Adjust the drive pinion preload
  6.  
  7. Rotate the drive pinion, using a torque wrench while tightening the flange nut to make sure the bearing preload is 10.4-16.5 inch lbs. (1.2-1.9 Nm) for a new bearing or 5.2-8.7 inch lbs. (0.6-1.0 Nm) for a used bearing. Tighten the flange nut to achieve the preload torque readings originally recorded.

CAUTION
Never loosen the pinion nut to reduce bearing preload.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Drive pinion nut, stake it
     
    Front driveshaft. Tighten the fasteners to 54 ft. lbs. (74 Nm).
     
    Under cover

  3. Fill the differential with gear lubricant and check for leaks.
  4.

  5. Drain the differential housing oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front driveshaft.
  8.  
  9. Remove the companion flange, as follows:

    Loosen the staked part of the nut, using a chisel and a hammer
     
    Companion flange nut, using tool 09330-00021
     
    Companion flange, using tools 09950-30011 and 09954-03010
     

  10.  
  11. Remove the oil seal and slinger, as follows:

    Oil seal, using tool 09308-10010
     
    Oil slinger

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil slinger
     
    New oil seal, using a hammer and tool 09554-22010 to a depth of 0.165-0.189 in. (4.2-4.8mm).

  3. Install the companion flange, as follows:

    Companion flange
     
    New nut, lubricated with hypoid gear oil
     
    Torque the nut to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm), using tool 09330-00021.
